Galil and 5.56 barrel life question

I've finally got the parts together for a long anticipated Galil project. So far I've scrounged up two original IMI barrels, both chrome lined, one being a 1/12 twist and the other a 1/7 twist. The third barrel I have is an American made reproduction barrel by "Green Mountain" barrels that is not chrome lined. I've been told Green Mountain makes barrels for some of the major gun manufacturers and that their barrels are good quality.

Can anyone speak specifically to the 5.56 round with regard to barrel life in a chrome plated or non chrome plated bore? I've heard some claim that chrome bores last twice as long, while some say the difference is slight? Right now I'm leaning towards using the repro barrel for my build and saving the two original IMI barrels as spares or future trading fodder.

Trbon8r, you picked up one of the recentley imported Galil kits I presume? How was the condition? I've always wanted a Galil, especially a 5.56 ARM. They've always just been to pricey.

I bought my kit off of gunbroker. I paid a bit more ($450), versus the going rate of around 300 bucks, but the kit I'm buying is a select grade kit in 95% condition.

Some of the $300 kits I've seen look pretty beat up. Sure you can refinish the parts to be like new, but that doesn't make them good parts. For example, how many miles are there on the bolt, carrier, and other small parts? To me, for something that winds up being an expensive build anyway, it was better to spend a little extra. Or at least I hope it's worth it since I have yet to see the kit. It should be here this week!

Like you, I always wanted a Galil too but the prices were too high. I just couldn't justify $2500 or more for the original. Now that parts have become available the time is finally right. I've done a lot of asking around, and it appears that Ohio Rapid Fire has made some improvements on their receivers in the QC department. While they still might need some fitting here and there, it doesn't sound like a problem for an experienced smith. Parts kit $450 + receiver $315 + $50 in U.S. 922r parts + $400 labor to assemble = $1215 for a Galil with mostly IMI parts. :D Not cheap, but still better than $2500+.

Now I just need to decide which barrel to use.
