Flying bird was the consensus. There are no Javelina there, though there's plenty of hogs of the European phenotype. These are wild boar, studies say 97 percent phenotype, not feral hogs like around here.
A slim possibility. I am in theoretical Canada Lynx range, with occasional sightings well to the North of me. The cats I have tracked on property were definitely bobcat, one was at the extreme end of their maximum size. Based on what I see, the body shape in movement is not right for a canine...either dog, small wolf or coyote. The only dog I know of in the area is a Lab, definitely not that. I'm still going with bobcat. Hopefully he'll make a better appearance, would be nice to add one of these to my digital trophy collection (or perhaps a full body mount poised to pounce from the loft in my cabin). Anybody else have some mystery pics we can guess at?
Dang, I was still wrong. Never considered flying squirrel, thought it was a pine squirrel. Thanks
I don’t think we have flying squirrels in Minnesota. That’s a red squirrel.
Well,we do have Flying Squirrels in MN. As a kid growing up east of Ely, it was great fun to shine the bird feeders after dark on the little gliding rats.
Still have them because a friend of mine has a cabin about twenty miles up the Fernberg Trail, also east of Ely. One winter night several years ago, looking out his cabin window I asked him if there was any he had seen. Sure enough, same thing, spotted one with a flashlight in his birdfeeder.
Occasionally, they would fly out of the tree when cutting down hazard trees (particularly large dead aspen with woodpecker holes) along snowmobile trails.
I caught one in a pine marten set maybe thirty or so years ago, also.
These squirrels have larger eyes and kinda flat tails. You may not have FS around Brainerd, but trust me, they do exist in northern MN.(Bullwinkles too!)

Well I'll be darned. Never seen one before. I've spent quite a bit of time up around Ely, Orr, and International Falls. Actually the most moose I have seen have been around Breckenridge.
Been seeing this cat at our hunting camp the last few years. We are debating if it's a bobcat or a Lynx. View attachment 803340 View attachment 803341 View attachment 803342 View attachment 803344
I guess I'm just dumb ,but what's the difference between a Bobcat and a Lynx?Been seeing this cat at our hunting camp the last few years. We are debating if it's a bobcat or a Lynx. View attachment 803340 View attachment 803341 View attachment 803342 View attachment 803344
Yes, common to have water tanks spread out on larger ranches that don't have a natural resource for it. <SNIP>
Whoever put the tank in place was thoughtful enough to provide a 'climb out stick' for those smaller animals that fall in and couldn't otherwise get out.
