Anyone loading for a gen 4, in particular one in .40? Does the recoil reducing dual recoil spring require somewhat hotter loads to cycle the pistol reliably?

I'm going to be upgraded at work to a gen 4 22 here soon and am wondering if I will have to mess with what works in my current gen 3.

I have one a G23 GEN4 and I load at the min of WSF and 155 , 165 grain projectiles works just fine.
Works as a Glock does :D

Grab whatever ammo you would like and I bet the glock will work. Glocks while people debate and debate work and work very well.

Haven't seen any 'Gen 4 Glock only' factory loads yet!!

So I'm guessing they shoot standard .40 S&W loads just fine.

No. My Gen4 in 40cal doesn't need special ammo. Cycles everything.

"Recoil Reducing" -- Ha. It doesn't reduce any recoil as far as I can tell.

If you never shot a Gen 4 before, be totally open minded about the replaceable backstraps.
I started with the one I thought I would like, with the highest hold.
But it's the worst one for me. I tried the others and found the one I shoot best.
Just don't pre-think what you think you like. Shoot all backstraps to find the one best for you.

Thanks guys. To clarify, I am currently loading my .40 ammo rather light, under factory specs (using berrys plated and either win 231 or Unique).

I've been running 4.5g win 231 for 180g. Still tweeking the Unique load, but 5.0g was very soft and accurate. I try to stay light for .40 loads, a bit paranoid I guess.

No manufacturer would produce a variant of a very popular handgun that requires special ammo do run. That would be the kiss of death for the gun and possibly the manufacturer.

4.4 is starting load with 180 grain lead bullet, according to Hodgdon. You should be OK.

If I could get the mech tech upper off of mine id be O.K.:D! That berb. f.p./180 is fun. But im @ around 1300fps w/P.P. .

No worries there, just asking about running my lighter than factory loads.

When I started, I was issued a gen 2, all I gained with the gen 3 was a rail for a light (which was a huge benifit in the field).

Cops use Glocks for a reason, not just because there cheap.

Is there a translator in the house? :)

I am surprised that you are allowed to run handloads through your issued weapon. I am not a LEO, but I shoot with some. They all tell me that they have been instructed NEVER to shoot reloads thru their issued weapons. (or steel cased ammo for that matter, but that is a topic for another place and time)

My gen 3.5 G30 (gen 4 style dual recoil spring, but no interchangeable back straps) does not like loads at minimum charge. Still cycles most of the time, but does not kick the slide back far enough to lock on the last round of the mag. Has a little trouble with feeding and does not kick the brass out very far, Most of it only a few inches up and it hits my hand on the way down. Never had any trouble yet with factory rounds. I am going to run some mid level rounds through it tomorrow and see how they function. I agree, Glocks just work.

"I am surprised that you are allowed to run handloads through your issued weapon." I never said I was given permission to :) Not enough training and lack of raises has driven me to it. I'd rather get yelled at (or get written up) than loose a gunfight from lack of practice. Peat , your info about the dual recoil spring and light loads was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you sir! Keep us posted on how those mid range loads work.

My G30 and G41 don't like light loads. Stuff that runs fine in 1911s and SIG P220 will not reliably cycle the Glocks. However my G23 runs well on pretty much anything. It's a Gen 3 though. If it's a published load it will likely work okay but you never know until you try it in your gun with you behind it.

I can't say for the .40 but in 9mm what works for my wife in a Gen3 19 sometimes will not cycle for her in a new Gen4. My me it will work but I have a stiffer arm and grip. Also what works in my 30S will not function in my 41 or my son's 21. These are all very light loads so you may have to bump up a couple of tenths or you may not. My granddaughter who is twelve cannot shoot a light load in her Gen3 19 as her grip and arms are not stiff enough.
All factory loads work in all guns.

Update

My first set of loads for the G30 was 3.6 gr of 700-x behind a 230 gr fmj-rn. Bumped it up to 4.2 gr and shot some today. They were perfect. gun cycled flawlessly and I was more accurate with them than WWB. The felt recoil from them was just a touch lighter. I had loaded up a few at 5 gr. They were pretty hot. No pressure signs, but I was only looking for plinking rounds. New to reloading, so I will leave defensive ammo to the factory. 4.2 gr it is.
