If it's walnut, it's worth the effort. If you've got checkering, mask it off. It's just easier. Use a fine point X-Acto knife to cut the masking tape in the border groove of the checkering. When you want to take that masking off, use your X-acto again to just break the finish in that same border so you won't pull up the finish around the checkering.

Look at "Toms Miroku". This is early in the stages of a refinish. Note you can see the open grain. When I was through w/ this stock, it looked like the photo of my Ceasar Guerini (he wanted an English Red finish). Smooth and level.

I'll send some pic of other stocks I've done just for your info. After you've applied the finish, you can use what you want - tung, linseed - which really makes no difference for maintenance work.
