i'm planning on taking a couple of classes this summer and i've really been looking at personal tactics self defense and firearmz firearms self defense. i was curious if anyone here had taken any classes from either of these two schools and was looking for some iinput on the quality of the training.

thanks in advance for any help.

Just don't let them have your partner shoot your target while you're standing downrange right next to it......:scrutiny:

Randy Harris teaches for SI out of Chattanooga, TN
Rick Klopp out of Blairsville, GA

smince, have you had training from them before? if so could you please elaborate on what classes and what you thought of the classes (quality of training, atmosphere of training etc)?

thanks for the suggestion btw.

Langston, AL - Tiger McKee, SHOOTRITE Firerms Academy LLC - http://www.shootrite.org/schedules/Schedules.html

Tiger runs a very nice combination handgun and carbine class. He essentially teaches a straight up Clint Smith "Thunder Ranch" doctrine with some of his own techniques. Very calm atmosphere, no silliness. His range is between Fort Payne and Scottsboro. Great instructor for getting the basics down and he has a very nice range. One of the best things is running his "wall" that's about 50y long with different sections that simulate different terrain and situations.

Scottsboro is a 3 hour drive from Atlanta, best route is to go to Rome and take the state highway through Ft Payne. Very scenic route.

You'll find that Suarez is a very polarizing person. One of my friends has taken a bunch of classes from him. Others will not take a class due to his personal history. My personal take is that he is an effective trainer while not being someone I'd invite in my house or drink a beer with. YMMV

There is a trainer in Atlanta that seems to do good work. I think we had a discussion on this a month or two back.

Two classes with Gabe and two with Randy.

I've been CCW and training since 1983. I've learned more valuable lessons from SI in the last three years than the other 17 together.

Quality of training is excellent. They treat everyone like adults. Real friendly. Gabe is a nice guy. Let he who has no sin cast the first stone...

Tiger is a good guy, too. I live about 25 miles from his training area. I had the chance to take a class with him or Gabe (in Gadsden AL) for the same money, but I elected to go with SI.

Like many modern technique schools, ShootRite has a progression of courses. No matter your skill level, they typically want you to start with a basic level and progress through the series of classes.

My first two classes with SI were the advanced Extreme Close-Range Gunfighting and 0-5Ft Gunfighting. They didn't make me sit through Defensive Pistol Skills for a waste of $400 before moving on.

The level of training offered by SI is more attractive to me than shooting from a Weaver stance on a square range.

i know Ken of "Firearmz" school. I have never trained with him, but i have sat in his living room and chatted with him and a very popular instructor. From what he has to say he seems good to me, but again that is just from what i have talked with him about. He basically hosted a class with the traveling instructor. Ken wasn't at the class as he had some stuff going on, but he made sure that we got the support that we needed to run the course without any issue. seems like a good guy, and we agreeded on alot of things, swapped ideas, and opinions etc.

I will say that Tactical Response comes to Conyers GA quite a bit, and you should check them out, i have taken 2 classes with them, fighting and advanced fighting handgun. I would attend more classes with them.

Rob Pincus of the Combat Focused Shooting program also travels alot, and if you see that he is holding a course in GA anywhere you should definetly go.

Also Roger's Shooting School is in Eljay GA. I haven't been there yet but that is a place that i am gonna hit up before i leave GA.

Gryphon Group in Florida (Melbourne). I think they allow private civilians. Defensive and offensive driving, off road tactical driving, and tactical shooting training, concealed carry training, etc. Great course. Hands down some of the best gun and driving training I've ever had.

No kidding, they train the ELITES of our military, DoD, State department, etc. I was fortunate to attend.

When you think about it, driving and shooting are two of the most important tactical skills you may ever need.

May 06, 2010-A 50-year-old man was mistaken for a target and accidentally shot during an exercise at a firearm-training facility in northern Arizona, authorities said.

The Florida man was training with three of his colleagues Sunday at the Gunsite Academy in Paulden, which is about 30 miles north of Prescott, the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said Thursday.

The man was standing on a catwalk as his colleague fired at targets. The colleague saw the black silhouette of the man and fired, shooting the man in the abdomen, officials said.

Instructors administered first aid before he was flown to a local hospital for treatment and surgery. On Thursday, he was listed in good condition.
Trainees had been told not to shoot in the area of the catwalk. No charges were expected against the shooter.
