The AR-15 / M16 design uses a 7 lug bolt, with the extractor slotted where an 8th lug would fit. I can't remember where I read it, but there has been some discussion that removing / not including the lug opposite the extractor actually equalizes the forces across the bolt and contributes to longer life.
Read the same thing a couple years ago in a magazine article. It was concerning Armalites improved bolt design that simply shortened the 7th lug rather than removing it.
