Hi...

I have just checked on my 1880's S&W topbreak in .38S&W and I have noticed that it has a light rust formation all over the lower right portion of the frame...it is nickel finished...how can I take the rust away??

Ok, I can not have it taken to any gun shop or gunsmith because this gun has no papers as it belonged to my great grandfather.Taking this gun outside my property (unless it is taken for registration) is illegal.

Homemade suggestions??

As I see it from here .... you have corrosion where Ni plating has degraded. Thus .... not that easy to treat and remedy.

Short of sending it to an ''expert'' . which seems not possible .... best you can do is perhaps ... use the finest steel wool available to you ... and judiciously and lightly rub the affected area with it .. and some CLP or similar .. remove the red oxide component and thus prevent any pitting from happening .... keep that oily protection there and ...... live with the cosmetic aspect!

Maybe even try and phosphate the area too but some color change may result.

Someone may have a better way. Considering the age of it, probably has light scratches.
Try something like chrome polish first, then using plenty of the polish on the finest steel wool.
