One of my guitar amp 'customers' has fallen on some hard times and isn't going to be able to pay me for some work I've done for him. I don't really care about the money, because he's a very good friend but he is insisting on paying me somehow. He offered me a tristar hunter (older model, not the EX) 12 gauge with 28" barrels. I know they don't have the greatest reputation, but it's effectively a free gun. :neener:

It's got a little bit of surface rust in a few spots but that will come off w/ a few minutes in me electrolytic rust remover. Lock-up seems really tight and it feels really good. I know that they have had some issues with firing pins breaking. This one has only had about 120 rounds through it, so I think it should be ok. Anything else I should be aware of?

Edit: here's a link to an identical gun.

Be sure to pattern it to determine if the barrels are well regulated, and so you'll know where/how it shoots. I'd try to shoot a few rounds of trap with it to see how it functions and points. Many owners are pleased with that gun and your new shotgun may be a good one. Enjoy!

Finally took possession of it yesterday. It's in really good shape and I love the trigger pull on it. I bought a set of snap caps and have been doing mounting and dry-fire practice. It seems to fit really well, but that could just be NGS, New Gun Syndrome. I'm ordering some extended choke tubes for it. It came with IC and Mod chokes, but the the forcing cones on them seen extremely short, as in 1/4" or so. There is a tiny bit of surface rust on a couple of spots along the rib along one side.

The reason it took so long for me to get it is that Mike's brother (mike is my customer as is his brother) needed a gun to use for pheasant/dove/chukar/bunnies/etc. for this season. He added a couple dozen shells to the shot count, but that's about it. When I got it yesterday, the metal was totally devoid of any detectable oil, especially along the mating surfaces. I put a very small amount of light oil on it and it is much easier to open and close now.

The inertial barrel selection mechanism seems to work great and all other mechanical functions seem to work really well.

Now, all I've got left is to shoot it.

I love happy beginnings.....
Me too!

Too bad it snowed today. Gotta get my truck fixed. 700R4 spread through my garage waiting for me to finish rebuilding it. The van doesn't do the off-road snow thing very well. Still haven't tried out the new mechanical thrower either.

Ignore the couch. :) It's getting replaced in a couple of weeks.

As for barrel regulation, I'm hoping that they're about 5-feet separated at 40 yards so I can take out both the crossers at the same time if I accidentally get a simultaneous fire. :) Ok, not really. Once the rain and snow stops, I'm hoping to spend some quality time with it.
