So I have been thinking about getting my WASR-10 refinished, I was looking on gander mountain's website and they have a finish they can do called Cerokote, I've never heard of it but its a ceramic coating, supposedly extremely hard and corrosion resistant, do any of you know if this stuff is any good? If I don't get the Cerokote done I'm probably just going to have them parkerize it. The finish on it now just doesnt look very good at all.

have you considered a bake on finish? or even a basic spray on finish. no reason to invest large amounts of $$ into a AK pattern. i consider them work horses

I don't really know anything about bake on or spray on finishes haha. I just want something that will look and protect the rifle a better.

Take a look at my post in the section Gunsmithing and Repairs. You can refinish your WASR 10 yourself for about $6. Remove all of the furniture then clean up the finish and get any finish off that will rub off with a cloth. Degrease it, heat it in the oven on 300 for 30 mins to melt and burn off the cosmoline in the cracks then degrease it again, heat it to around 100 degrees in the oven or with a hair dryer, put a light coat on wait 10 mins heat it again put another light even coat, wait 10 mins and then hold the can back about 20" give it a dusting all over for a light rough matte looking finish. Wait about 20 mins for it to dry, then heat it in the oven on 400 degrees for 1.5 hours. Cover up any lettering and the serial number with very thin tape and give those areas a light coat at the end of the second coat.

Read the directions on the can also.

If hold the can to close when you are spraying the finish will be to thick and have a more semi gloss look to it. Test it out on some metal to get the feel of how it sprays. You want to go for thin even coats.

Here is the Link.

I used 1200 degree (or was it 1600, I forget) ceramic engine paint on my SAR1 and it turned out great. Holds up quite well. I think it was duplicolor, got it at Walmart I believe (they also have a 600ish degree non-ceramic type too). You could do the same thing w/ a specific spray on gun coat too.

All I did was remove the wood obviously and degrease the gun really good w/ some shop degreaser, hang it on a close line and put two light coats on it. Let it dry for a bit and then baked it in my kitchen oven (I cut up a coat hanger to use to fashion some hooks and such and hung the barreled action in the oven from the top rack) for a few hours at about 225 degrees or so. Looks great, it has a very nice even professional looking finish IMO. Not the greatest pic....:

The wood is the original stripped of the think varnish common on the early SARs (ugly dark brown, looked to have been applied w/ a mop). I then rubbed in boiled linseed oil for awhile and left it at that. Looks nice but I think the wood was generally thought to be nicer than the stuff on the current WASRs.

I also refinished by SAR2 w/ the same process. I would not hesitate to do the same w/ any future cheap AKs I get or modify in a way that would require a refinish such as a Saiga conversion or something.
