Okay, i'm looking to start another AK project and need some help. I can get WASR 10 hi-caps for right around $300 but am looking to do some work on it. The desired end result is a refenished(stock&metal) underfolder with a G2 trigger. How receptive is the WASR to these mentioned features? I know the trigger will be pretty simple but am not sure about the under folder part. Has anyone installed one on a WASR before? And should I refinish the wood or just replace? What should I use for refinishing metal/wood?

I've done some looking around KVAR for parts but am not sure if they would fit the WASR. I'm in somewhat of a financle bind at the moment(college) so I can't afford to buy an underfolder outright. I planned on doing all the work my self and would upgrade parts when able.

i dont know about the underfolder but alot of the new wasrs have the tapco G2 trigger already installed. They started doing that to fix the trigger slap problem. I kept the wood on mine and applied a few coats of tung oil and sanded with some steel wool. came out looking real nice. I also did what Ive seen some other members do on here is use flat black high temp grill paint to put a nice finish on the metal. even with a new coat of paint on the metal the safety keeps rubbing the paint off in a straight line . For some reason I think the receivers are different on the underfolders but I could be wrong.

totally different reciever, different rear trunion unless your into building AKs from parts sets and have a mill......... your better off buyin an underfolder to start with, for a hundred bucks more ya can get a Yugo m70ab2 200% better rifle and its already an underfolder.....

I can get the underfolders for around $440 but don't really care for the crappy black polymer furniture that comes on them now. Where is the best place to get replacement furnitue for it.

AKfiles.com

several folks makin custom stuff as well as iron wood designs....

As far as original wood........ most who waited are just outa luck their are ALOT of folks looking for original lumber for the Yugos ya can post a want to buy on several forum for sale sections in case some pops up.

A few things:
A WASR is not a good candidate for an underfolder. It can be done, requires grinding off the rivets and cutting a big hole for the underfolder and riveting that new trunnion in.
The Yugo underfolders, IMO are a significant step up from a WASR for not a whole lot more. For foregrips, ck the marketplace on akfiles, gunco, gunsnet. Also check with centerfiresystems.com. The yugo furniture is not interchangable with standard pattern akms. (I don't think the underfolder trunnion is either, I believe the yugo ak reciever is thicker, making the trunnion thinner and requiring shimming.)

Other options:
WASR with a Romy/EG side folder--it'll fit right on the stamped reciever.
Polish Underfolder--more spendy, but very nice. ($550ish?)

Check gunbroker for what you looking for and buyer beware--a lot of the original yugo barrels are poor (lack of chrome barrels, corrosive ammo, used in a civil war wreaks havok on a barrel...)

wasr10 underfolder

i have one with a g2 trigger. and mine came that way i love it. i had a fixed stock to and traded that for a 74, the under folder to me just looks really cool

They look cool, but I'd definitely shoulder it a few times (preferably fire one) to see if you like the feel. I like it when the metal is reallly cold and freezer burns my face! :)
