Getting Stag Arms Model 7 (6.8 SPC)

Hello All,

I am acquiring my first AR-15. I found a left handed model on Gunbroker that was NJ compliant and I just couldn't say no. Should have it next week.

I am intrigued by the 6.8 SPC, but the Model 7L probably wouldn't have been my first choice. I was eying the Model 5L but that was at least a 6 month wait direct from Stag.

I already have a pre-existing order in for a Stag Model 3L in .223. Since that order was placed direct with Stag last month, I still have a couple more months before it arrives. Figure I'd better get my AR's before you can't.

Any how, the Model 7 is set up as a varminter. I am looking to add a muzzle brake and possibly shorten the barrel a little. I'd like to get the overall length of the barrel closer to 18 inches including the muzzle brake. I am looking at the QC brake from PRI (the smaller of the two they offer for the 6.8).

So, is this a good choice for a brake? The barrel would have to be threaded to accept this new brake. Does anyone forsee a problem by shortening the factory length barrel which is 20.77 inches?

Wise? If you don't want to utilize it as a hunter, then probably.

Looks like you are looking to convert it to a model 5 then.

If it's done right, and I'm guessing it would be since you aren't asking this with hacksaw in hand, then it could turn out fine. However, it should definitely cost more in the end rather than simply buying a 5. If you're trying to make a 6.8 CQB rifle, go all the way down to 16" while you're at it.

I'm no expert, but I'll always take a shot in any AR discussion.

I would shoot it first, then decide on the muzzle brake. Why do you want the brake so bad? I just don't see the need for them on an AR.

Definitely fire it first, then see what you want to improve. I am running a Rock River 16" middy in 6.8SPC and recoil is just not an issue.

Thought in cutting barrel shorter was to save a little weight and make rifle a little handier.

Thought on muzzle brake was simply to cut muzzle flip for faster follow up shots.

I actually brought the rifle home tonight. So far I am quite pleased. Can't wait to shoot it. First I have to get some sort of sights on it. I'll probably start with some BUIS and than invest in the glass.

Looking at the muzzle, it appears that there is already a slight taper and marking where the barrel could be threaded for the brake.

I'll take the advice and shoot it first and than decide what steps are necessary. Probably leaning against shortening the barrel now.

Why would you want a break on the 6.8? You would be better off getting a flash hider. Like a vortex or something. The kick on the 6.8 isn't enough to warrant a break, + the flash hider will cut down on light if you do any night hunting.

There are a few flash hiders out there that are longer than the vortex too, but... Shoot it and see, I don't have any problems with follow up shots.

Unfortunately, I live in the great state of NJ and flash hiders are illegal but muzzle breaks are not. Go figure.

As for getting the 5L, I took what was available on the moment.
