My father recently found this rifle which I purchased unseen for a modest price. I am debating on what to do with it now that I have seen it. I know it is a Gew 98 that was converted into a 98k for WW2, at least I think so. The carvings are quite distinct but I would think someone's attempt to 'sporterize' what was probably a fine specimen at one time. What can be garnered about this rifle? If more pictures are needed please let me know. Any and all information is graciously appreciated.

Also I'm debating on whether I should seek out an original stock for it (what could I expect to pay) and try to restore it to it's former glory. I might sell it at the next gun show if it is a helpless case though I rarely sell rifles as they all become my boys! Asking price if I did?

Thanks in advance,
Kevin

What are you wanting to do with it? Hunt? Plink?

Have you checked the barrel or shot it for accuracy yet?

Is the stock disfunctional or just prettified?

greenlion,

It would be occasionally shot, but mostly collected. The barrel is fair, though I have not shot it as of yet. The stock is functional as is...it is a working rifle.

Were you able to view the pictures linked on my original post?

Thanks, Kevin

Yeah. I had to click them, but they work. I dunno... I think it is an interesting piece. I would keep it as is if it were mine.

It seems like a fun project gun. The problem with project guns is that they never make financial sense. If it were mine I would return it to military configuration and probably end up only shooting it two or three times a year. It would not be worth it financially but it would be fun.

it wouldn't be my first project that didnt make financial sense...

I have done plenty (have two ongoing right now), but my knowledge of the gew98 and this rifle in particular is limited. Not sure about this rifle as a project which is why I was trying to find out more about it.

Maybe I'll sell it tomorrow at a show and use the funds to help purchase a 6.5 caliber bolt action...

Thanks,
Kevin

Either get a 98k stock or a Vz-22 stock. Either works, as will most South American Contract rifles like Peruvian and Chilean. Just depends how close to correct you want.
