I want to gift a handgun to my son. I live in Pa, him in NH. Neither of us are prohibited.

I understand that the transfer has to go through FFL because of living in different states and has to be shipped FFL to FFL.

I was wondering if it is legal to travel to his state with the handgun and do a transfer when I'm there?

I have carry permits for Pa and Utah, have traveled with firearms before so understand that process.

Just want to stay legal but would prefer not to spend $ shipping if I'm going there anyway.

I'll get into their website or call them if need be. Thought maybe someone else here can benefit by a posting with link.

True.

False. There is no legal requirement to be shipped FFL to FFL. Only that the gun go TO an FFL.

Yes. You deliver the gun to an FFL in NH. The NH FFL will transfer the gun to your son.

I'll have the link for you in a second.

Q: To whom may an unlicensed person transfer firearms under the GCA?

A person may sell a firearm to an unlicensed resident of his State, if he does not know or have reasonable cause to believe the person is prohibited from receiving or possessing firearms under Federal law. A person may loan or rent a firearm to a resident of any State for temporary use for lawful sporting purposes, if he does not know or have reasonable cause to believe the person is prohibited from receiving or possessing firearms under Federal law. A person may sell or transfer a firearm to a licensee in any State. However, a firearm other than a curio or relic may not be transferred interstate to a licensed collector.

Call beforehand and make sure the FFL will do this. It's legal but some FFLs won't accept transfer guns "off the street." My local Cabela's won't, for example. Ship it to them, no problem. But they wouldn't do a transfer on a firearm brought in personally for some reason.

FedEx and UPS corporate policies require that handguns be shipped overnight, which is pricey. That's why a lot of people have an FFL ship it - we can use USPS priority, which is cheaper even when factor in your local FFL's transfer fee.

Thanks for the responses and the link.

I thought the transfer had to be FFL to FFL. My gun shop won't do it any other way. I had a long gun shipped private party to my FFL, which I knew was legal. The owner said OK when I called to verify. When the rifle arrived, one of his counter guys flipped on me telling me how illegal this was. I asked him to call his owner, who allowed the transaction to be completed but told me it would never happen again in his store.

1KPerDay, I will call his FFL before hand to verify. Thanks

Thanks again NavyLCDR
