Giving a gun as a gift out of state?

Is giving a gun as a gift illegal if it is to someone in a diffirent state as long as the firearm is legal in both states?

I'm afraid I know the answer, and if what I'm thinking is true it really sucks.

What about if you change residences and then sell it/give it as a gift to someone in your new state of residence?

Basic rule of thumb: if it's out of state, the transfer has to go through an FFL. No big hassle, really. Of course, if you're visiting your friend, or your friend is visiting you, and the gun falls into the wrong bag upon departure... well, where's the harm?
