GLock 17L or 24? Both in same place

Hi guys, I'm done playing with my 1911 build and it's onto something new for me again, so which do I buy? the Glock 17L or the 24?
There is a small possiblity that I may enjoy the occassional idpa match in my area, but in all likelihood this particular gun will sit in the safe, come out and shoot a few hundred rounds per year, and go back in the safe.
Which would be easier to enter into amateur competition if I wanted to do that?
Which would be more valuable after say, 15 or 20 years?
They are both Gen 3 and are both the same price, within 20 dollars.
My local gun shop has one example of each, (I know, both in the same place at once, talk about a tease.........) and before you say buy both I of course already thought of that but the recent divorce has destroyed that option.

I am buying the one you guys tell me to get, and AFTER I get mine, I'll disclose where the other one is........................

isn't the 24/17L too long to play in IDPA?
the G34/35 would be a better fit.

if you are set on getting a 24/17L, i'd go with the 24 and get a 9mm conversion barrel for it (if you want to shoot 9mm)

Yup, not legal in IDPA.
I would get the 17L. My 17L was a tack driver, my 24 was a dog, but to be fair it was an old one with a very generous chamber.

The 17L is much less common in my experiance. The only one I've ever seen i. person is mine, which I bought over the internet after being unable to find one locally. The 24 I've found countless times, but never bought as I'm not a .40 fan, though I'd sure like to try one with a .357 Sig conversion barrel.

24 I don't know, but 17L is good for competition.

you guys mention the long slides not being legal in idpa, is that the whole club, or just stock classes? I know nothing about the competitions as all of my drill work has been with local cops and ex military types, but I have never entered a competition so, what are the classes? and is the 24 / 17L totally illegal in all idpa or just for newbie classes?

elGodfather: you mention the 17L specifically as a competition gun, which class or sanctioning body are you referring to? if that gun is advantageous within a group i'd like to know who so I can see if that group plays in my area?

The 17L cost more to start with, so it might cost more later -- but just because a gun is more rare doesn't mean that it's going to be really valuable at some later time, or even wanted by a collector.

Note: about 90% of the guns people own will never be more valuable than they were when they bought them. Example: a gun someone paid $500 for would cost over $700 in 2010 dollars, if you were buying exactly the same thing. Darn few guns are really an investment -- and buying one with hopes of later selling it for a profit is a fool's gambit.

17L's and 24's are not regular production items, Glock only makes a run of them every two or three years. When the current supply is exhausted the price will rise until the next batch arrives.

I have seen more 24s then I have 17Ls. I do want a 17L badly. They are reputed to be excellent guns. I have been setting aside money for one.

I don't know if you'll see much if any appreciation in the 17L vs the 24, but I know the 17L is much harder to find in my experiance. Plus again in my experiance I've found the 9mm to be more accurate as well as cheaper to shoot. Beyond that it's your preference and you'll got a darn fine weapon with either.
