If the AA conversion slide was any heaver then the 22LR round wouldn't be able to cycle it. I've shot one for 2 years now & with the right ammo (I use CCI Mini-mags) it is a reliable practice gun. It is what it is. It allows you to practice cheaply with the gun that you would usually shoot. It isn't a tack driver. If you want a target gun then get something else, but to practice handling & shooting your actual SD gun, it is acceptable.
For 22LR target practice I use a Browning Buckmark, but I like the newer guns that look & feel a lot like service pistols. The German Sport pistol & the ISSC M22 come to mind. They are approximately the same price as the conversion, but are a complete dedicated 22 pistol. But even these guns are light for the same reason that the AA slide is light. If you want a heavy 22LR pistol you need to buy a metal frame 22. In these guns most of the weight is in the metal frame & very little is in the slide.
I have the AA kit for the G-17. Aluminum slide provides very little weight and my junit would only function relkiably with CCI MiniMag or Remington Golden.
You may want to investigate the Tactical Solutions unit - it's all steel. I have the TacSol unit for a 1911 and it functions reliably with Federal copper plated/washed bulk pack ammo as well as the other two mentioned. Check with TacSol and see which ammo they recommend for their unit.
