As part of my short list of guns i want, the glock 23 is another on my hit list.Im already familiar with glock in general as i have a glock 17 but wanted to hear from those that own one.

1.Hows the recoil on these?

2.I know the reliablility with the G17 is awesome. Is the glock 23 in the same catergory?

3.If i get one it would most likely be a Gen 3.Are there any problems for those that have a Gen 4?

Others currently on my short list...CZ75B,Sig 226

get the gen4 23. no issues with tac lights attached, and a recoil spring optimized for 40cal with slightly less recoil than the gen3.

(and before people run in here saying "there's issues with gen4's": the only gen4 models that had issues are the g19/17's).

mine's been awesome. :)

You can expect a G23 Gen 3 or 4 to be a fine .40 S&W Compact. Recoil isn't vicious in the Gen 3 & less in the Gen 4. Same reliability you enjoy in your G17. The rest of your short list are great picks as well. When you shop for your SIG 226, get your hands around the new E2 version & tell us what you think ;).

I know some talk of the G23 recoil and how snappy the round is, but i shoot my Gen3 G23 as good or better than anything i own, i am NOT a great shot but with my G23 i surprise myself sometimes.....:)

My G23 and its little brother, the G27 have never let me down. Recoil is easily handled with the 23. The G27 is a little heavier in the recoil department. I also bought a Lone Wolf 9mm conversion barrel for the G23 and some G19 mags that is very accurate functions great in both pistols.

G23

I've used my G23 (actually a G32 with a .40 bbl) in at least a half dozen pistol classes with no issues. That held true when it was a .357 sig or as it is now as a .40. I changed barrels due to increased cost of .357 sig ammo. Blazer stopped making 357 sig in aluminum cases and the cost was higher than .40.

I bought another G23 in about 2002 that was part of the series (EXX- )with bad rear rails. I ran it through a couple 700 + round classes, detailed it a week later to find it did break a rear rail sometime during that class. I never felt any difference nor did the gun malfunction, even on 3 rails. Glock took care of it and I never had an issue even after the new frame came in.

Recoil is not bad with either bbl. Good choice.

Enjoy.

In 1998 the FBI tested the 23 and they went an average of 18,500rds. before a stoppage.

Get a GEN3, don't listen to that Apocalypse guy; he has temporary insanity.

recoil isn't bad with either barrel
I find recoil less "snappy" with my .357 SIG barrel than with the .40 S&W. But it makes sense because of bullet weight (124 vs 180). Funny thing is, metal poppers seem to got down louder, faster, harder with the .357 Sig.

I had a Gen 3 G27(I know not the same thing) and it's typical Glock, you already know what you'll get + some more recoil(it was manageable with the G27 so the G23 would be straight).

You already have a Glock though, I would get a CZ 75B from your short list. The CZ just feels way better than a Glock, costs about the same(maybe even less depending on the store) and even stock CZ triggers are way better than Glock triggers(personal opinion).

It took more than a few trips to the range with my G 23 to get accurate enough, but it is now my EDC and I'm quite sure I'll own it for years. I have CZ's, Browning HP, Kimber, and they all have things I like about them but the G 23 is the one I've put more rounds down range with it and I can get it on target quicker. It's just what I'm comfortable with. The CZ 75 B fits my hand better, it just get too heavy by the end of the day. And the Browning is just too pretty for daily carry. A "friend" suggested I go ahead and put a big scratch on it so I'd quit treating it like a newborn and start carrying it. Crazy man is he!

Quick shot;To answer your question my wife is gonna let spend about $1000 roughly after i get my tax refund.Im already looking at several scenarios of what i might buy including hopefully 2 guns.Besides the glock 23,Sig 226,and CZ75b..im also looking at a SS ruger GP100 .357,ruger SS SP101 .357 and berretta 96.I know if i get something like a sig i most likely wont be able to get much else;so im kinda weighing my options esp/ between calibers as i kinda want a 40 SW in my small arsenal as well as maybe another 9mm or 357.I have some tough choices i think.

Glock 23 is my Glock of choice. I've owned a 19 and a 17, they were fine but the 23 is the best. I always felt 15-17 rounds was more than I really needed, while each of those rounds was less powerful than I wanted.

One problem I ran into with my G23 was the magazines. The factory magazine springs were not 100% reliable; I had 2 failures-to-feed in my first 500 rounds, always on the last round of a magazine. I disassembled all my mags and noticed 0.5" difference in the spring lengths. I bought a 10 pack of Wolff extra power springs and have had zero problems since. I'm friends with a USPSA Grandmaster who also uses wolff magazine springs. I have heard others have had similar issues. I think it's a slightly too short/weak factory mag spring. Glock uses the same spring in their subcompact 9 round mags as they do in their compact 13 round mags; which strikes me as a bad idea.

So, moral of the story, I run only Wolff magazine springs and I download my mags by 1 round. (To make mags easier to seat as well as to save mag springs.)

I also put Trijicons on, as well as Vickers Tactical mag release and slide stop, and a factory smooth trigger and an NY-1 spring. In a nutshell, I replaced every operator interface on the gun. The factory mag release is sharp and hard to push, the factory slide stop is slick and hard to push, the serrated trigger is uncomfortable, the factory sights are not durable, and I feel the std. trigger spring is too light for a carry gun. :)

I should also add that respectable .40 hollow point ammo is easy to come by and cheap due to its widespread acceptance.

Even with the NY-1 spring and shooting a compact .40, I have no problem keeping all my shots in the A zone of an IDPA taget at 25 yards (an 8" circle, and yes I realize it's technically the -0 zone, and A Zone is a IPSC term.:))

2. They're reliable unless you get a bad extractor or a bad magazine. Some of the newest extractors can be oversized and fit too tight, causing failures to feed. All you have to do is replace the extractor if that's the case. Some of the newest magazines may also fail to feed, there are protrusions of plastic at the front of the feed lips which may be too large and rub against the top round as it rises, slowing its rise and causing a failure to feed. All you have to do is shave those protrusions down until the magazine feeds reliably. I've had to do it to two magazines now.
Here's a picture showing the plastic protrusions, you don't have to follow the specific instructions in the picture, just shave those protrusions down until the magazines feeds reliably.

3. The newest Glocks, both Gen3 and Gen4, both 9mm and .40 may have a problem with erratic ejection. This problem can usually be fixed by doing one or all of three things. Get the most recent guide rod version for Gen4, replace the extractor, or get the newest ejector. The newest ejector is being used in both Gen3 and Gen4 now.
Here's a picture of the newest ejectors, the picture says they're for Gen4 but they're being used in Gen3 now as well.

If the gun has this ejection problem, you'll notice some spent casings ejecting over your head, straight up, barely coming out of the ejection port, hitting you in the head or face, some going over the left side of the gun, some even ejecting over your left shoulder and downrange to the left. You'll also notice triangular dents/scrapes at the case mouth of most of the spent casings and brass dust collecting on the edges of the ejection port. You may even see some failures to eject.

The G23 is my 2nd favorite glock and what i carry most often. The recoil isn't bad and i fiind it to be accurate. If 40 caliber ammo was the same price as 9mm i would shoot it alot more.Today at the range i past the 15,000 round mark on my G17 and its been 100%.
