I'm very close to buying a Glock 34.
I want a 9mm that I can eventually use in competition. I have researched other brands but feel this is the best gun 'straight out of the box'.
What other options should I be considering with a similar barrel length and cost?
Has anyone got any positive or negative opinions on the G34?
Thanks.

There is no doubt about it.
The Glock 34 is the best out of the box action (IDPA, IPSC etc..) match gun you can buy.
More people compete and win with Glock 34's than any other pistol.
You can go to the various websites and look at scores and the guns that shot them.
Custom 1911's do very well also, but thay need more attention and cost more.

A little tap and he went right over the edge!:D
My Glock 34 is one of my all time favorite handguns.

My only Glock is a G34, and I fondle and shoot it every chance I get...

if women did not exist, I would hook up with my G34.

I prefer the 17 to the 34, but I do realize that I am in a minoriity point of view there.

Shoot both, one will call to you.

A Tactical XD with a Canyon Creek trigger job would get the nod from me now, but that is a very recent development, my 9mm competition gun is a G17.....

After looking at both these guns today in the gun store I would like to hear anyone's comparisons between a G34 and a Taurus PT92/99.
Obviously ignoring the big cost difference, do they compare well?

The G34 is a great handgun...I shot one for a year in USPSA production and IDPA and did pretty well...I recently switched to a CZSP01..which I shoot better....but would recommend the G34 to any shooter.

I have a PT-99, but I have never shot it in competition. It would work just fine, and there have been quite a few REALLY fine shooters using the Beretta. IMO the Taurus is as good as the Beretta.

For me the Glock wins over the Taurus and most of that is because it is a lot easier to get good sights for and good magazines, the balance of my decision comes from a consistent trigger pull being easier to manage. The DA/SA pull is harder to manage unless you practice it, and I have not put that effort in.

So, reading between the lines and after reading a lot of previous threads here on te PT92/99 I think I conclude that it will be a good entry level comp handgun.
I can get the G34 later when/if I get sufficiently involved, until then the Taurus is half the cost of the Glock. It seems crazy not to buy one.

The PT92 isn't a bad choice and they do have a very attractive price. Glocks are not for everybody.

Think hard about cost decisions regarding firearms. If you compete in IPSC you will be buying more magazines, a holster, magazine holders and a lot of ammo.

A few hundred dollars won't seem like much when you look back 5 years from now and switching from a Taurus to the glock won't be free.

Every time I have tried to settle for a few bucks (or a few hundred bucks) less in the firearms world I have regretted it and it has cost me more in the end when I sell the stuff I bought to save money and buy what I should have bought in the first place.

I do beleive that practice is 90% of the shooting sports and equipment is 10% but there is a reason that you see tons of glocks and few beretta's and taurus's at matches even though the glocks cost more.

I agree on the cost except there are two mitigating circumstances.
I am trying to limit how much I spend presently but won't have that problem at all in the future, I just got 2 guns in 2 months already and I am supposed to be putting all the money into remodelling our house. A third gun is Ok but I need to limit the expenditure somewhat.
Secondly, once the remodel is over I will be back to 'situation normal', a lot of disposable income. So I will get the G34 then and continue with the P92 if necessary. I don't intend ever selling a gun.
I'm only starting off the competition process, my FIL thinks I would be good at it and I want to start preparing with a view to competing next year or later. Hence the P92 will let me shoot a LOT of 9mm and gain familiarity.
My other guns are .40 and .22, I want to compete with 9mm.

Money spent?

I've several 1911s or variants and they are what I mostly carry. I also have a G34. The Glock 17 is one of the all time great pistols. The G34 is a refined version and it works much better than the sum of the parts would lead one to believe.

Money spent on something else will be money you have to earn again to get the Glock.

Buy the Glock 34.

Then do return and give thanks for our advice after you've shot it.

The 34 is still the best choice between a Beretta, a Taurus and the Glock.
I also own a Beretta M9 and the Glock is hands and feet above that pistol design in competition ability.
The Taurus is not the equal of the Beretta in accuracy or long term, heavy use, dependability but the gun isn't a bad clone and most folks won't shoot their pistols enough to realize the differences.
