Glock 36 vs.......

Looking for a cc handgun. 6" barreled magnums dont cut it. As much as I prefer revolvers I realize quality revolvers that are concealable arent easy to come by and cocealing speedloaders is difficult. I generally like the glocks I've shot and am interested in the slim sub-compact glock 36.

Thoughts and opinions?

I had one and it was a good shooter for sure. Some have reported issues from time to time but the one I had was great. That said, although it is a little fatter, I personally prefer the Glock 30, more specifically the 30sf or Gen4 G30. Compared to the 36, it holds more rounds and while it is wider and little heavier, it does handle recoil better and it's astonishingly accurate.

You can't go wrong with either.

Same here. I currently own both. The 30 is far more accurate than it should be, and enjoyable to shoot. The 36 is very good, less enjoyable to shoot. On a typical practice session, the 36 gets 50 rounds, the 30 gets 200.

The "new" 30s is a 30sf frame with a 36 slide. The 36 slide is 1/8" narrower than the 30.

My carry guns include those two and a G26. I don't feel undergunned with any of them.

I've had a 36 since they first came out and never a problem. It is a little picky about certain bullet configurations but I buy what it will shoot and everyone is happy. A 36 is basically the same size as a G 19 so the holsters all fit. I can carry either one and trade off when ever I want without additional holster expense. I prefer the 36 over the 30 versions. You still have more rounds than you do in a revolver.

My G 36 is a gen 2 about 10 yrs. old or more. I bought it used, eats everything, never had any issues nor regrets.

I've been playing with two .45s for EDC that would fit you needs. The above mentioned Springfield XDs45 and the Kahr CW45
I'm leaning toward the Kahr as my keeper for EDC, because of its shoot-ability and higher capacity.
They are very close size I use the same holster between them. The XDs does have the shorter grip but I carry appendix and at these guns sizes its a non-issue. Shooting them side by side and there is a big difference.....the XDs is much more unruly

If you want a Compact .45 Glock - Go With The 30SF

Our agency recently purchased 17 of the Gen 3 Model 36s. Of that number 11 were initially issued and all 11 had multiple FTE issues. Approximately 15 different officers (five of whom were firearms instructors) experienced the problems. We were consistently having around 5% malfunctions per 100 rounds.

In researching the problem we found that Glock had been sued and lost on this particular model over the same issues.

They did send a factory rep up to visit the problem and gave us Model 30SF(s) to replace all the Model 36(s) we had.

Not sure what the issue is caused from - but the 36 seems to be Glock's problem child. All the Model 30(s) have performed to what we have come to expect out of a Glock.

They were an LE state contract purchase. All were built after the order was placed, recent manufacture. All were consecutive numbers.

I love my G36.
It's not a target pistol. For what it, is it's a great pistol. It carries well IWB. Pretty much disappears under a T shirt.
Great for sunny Florida. It shoots straight and is very reliable. Very accurate with 185 gr. XTPs. Handles good one handed.
What more can I say.

I purchased a Glock 36 ca 10 years ago and carried it for several years. My unit was totally reliable, readilly controlable and quite accurate. At the tme I purchased the gun it was the only slim 45ACP semi auto without external safeties or hammer and 6+1 capability. Today you can also look at similar units produced by Springfield and Kahr. I still have the Glock either in my vehicle or under my pillow. I finally opted for a Kahr PM-9 in a pocket holster for my concealed carry unit.

If you like revolvers, why not look at a S&W 637 or 638? Small, light, good quality.

As for the Glock... I'd rather almost any Glock over the 36. Size of a 19/23/32, with about 1/3 capacity. If I wanted a .45, I'd just get a G30 or G30S and deal with the slightly increased weight/width.

I used to have a Glock 30 and absolutely loved it. Very accurate and easy to shoot. I've moved over to the 1911 format, but if I wanted to carry a 45 and didn't carry a 1911, it would be a Glock 30.

I don't know if you've seen the Glock 30S (distinct from the 30 or 30 SF), but if is a newly released factory configuration which basically is a G36 slide on a G30SF frame. It weighs 4 ounces less than the G30 and weighs nearly the same as a G36 when both are empty but holds 10 rds. The slide is thinner (same as 36) but the frame is still the same width as any other 30.

My G36 runs like a well oiled machine,no problems what so ever.The most I ever shoot at the range is 50 at a time,doesn't hurt my hand,and I don't think there's much kick either. Not quite as small as my Kahr CW45,but I like my 36 a good bit better. I have 3 Glocks,all shoot well and are Marine proof !

I'll look at the G30. I'll look at the XDS as well.

I am looking for a nice 1911 so this will by my 2nd gun in the .45 acp. I like to have at least two guns in each caliber i keep.

On a distant side note - how are the small lightweight 1911s like the Colt new agent?

The 36 is just too big for what you get. A 30, 30S or 30SF with the optional 9 round magazine is shorter than the 36 using the standard 6 round magazine and, therefore, hides better for me. The XDS is substantially shorter although you give up a round in the standard capacity magazine. (I have not been able to get my hands on a 7 round XDS magazine to compare it.)

Some people used to complain that the 30 or the 30SF was too thick to carry comfortably IWB because of the slide thickness. This is not a problem for me, but the 30S should take care of that issue.

The only value I see in the 36 now is for people with hands too small to grip a 30 and who need the extra round over the XDS or people who live in New York and want a low capacity Glock.

My favorite sized carry gun has always been the CCO, commander sized slide on an officer frame, for the 45acp. When looking for a non 1911 45acp I came across the Glock-36. It was about the same size as my CCO's and was lighter in weight. I bought it onsite and it has been my EDC gun since. No issues of anytype and an excellant shooter. Since I was used to the 6+1 of the CCO I had found the best of both worlds in size and weight for the best ever caliber 45 acp.

I never owned, but have shot a G36 and found it to be a very nice little gun. it belonged to a friend of mine and he asked me to help with disassembly one afternoon after shooting. it felt much tighter than my G23 at the time. recently i picked up an XDs as i have developed a real liking for all things Springfield.

the XDs is a fantastic little gun and gives the G36 a run for the money. besides the obvious differences in dimensions and the XDs having a grip safety, they are seemingly similar guns. either is a great CCW. good luck.
