I'm looking to get a Gen 4 "carry-all do-all" pistol in .40 or 9mm. I am having trouble deciding on which one. I have one Gen 3 in .40 but several Gen 3's in 9mm .
I've narrowed it down to the 27 or 19 and the 17. I'll be carrying this gun , shooting it , taking it into the woods , carrying it to the grocery store and just about anything. I've had a Gen 4 before but not long enough to really appreciate them . I got rid of it due to me being a sucker for a Gen 3 but I want to buy a Gen 4 to keep .
1. On the 9mm side I have a 26 but sometimes carry it with a 19 mag an X-Grip so it is pretty much a G19 with a shorter barrel.
2. On the .40 side I have a 22. Of course its fullsize and cant be made any smaller unlike the 26 I listed above which can be made bigger when installing the bigger mag and X-Grip.
3. I listed the 17 becuase I have a Gen 2 and Gen 3 and thought a Gen 4 would be interesting.

This is a just for fun type of gun purchase since I sold my S&W M&P because I have just went away from them period. So guys/gals what are your thoughts and what would you pick ,,,, the Gen 4 27 or Gen 4 19 or Gen 4 17?

I think in your G26 you already have the most versatile Glock there is - certainly the most versatile 9mm. And you already have a couple of G17s, so between the 17 and 26 there isn't much use for a 19. That almost automatically defaults it to a 27, which will complement your 22 just as the 26 complements a 17.

A G19 is just about the perfect sized gun. Small enough for comfortable carry, large enough to be comfortable to shoot. I like G17s but they're rather large...

Do yourself a BIG favor and get a Gen 3 19, if you have to get something else. Seems like the 26 and 17 already has you covered. You won't regret it.

Who needs dual springs and back straps? I've seen to many pieces come flying out of Gen 4's in gun classes. YES I SAID FLYING OUT!

I wouldn't owe a .40 short and weak when the +p 9mm is plentyful.

I'm going to have to go with the G19. Personally, I don't need a .40, and I find the G19 to be a hard-to-beat combination: large enough to shoot well, small enough to conceal comfortably.

Since you specified a Gen4 17,19, or 27, I suggest the 19 for the same reasons that Spats McGee mentioned. IMO the 27 is too large to be small enough for really comfortable and undetectable CCW for all attire, and to small to be really comfortable and controllable for shooting. The 19 really is the best compromise of comfort for CCW and shooting. If it was me buying I would reconsider getting a Gen3 G19 instead of a Gen4. My first Glock was bought in 1991 and it was the G19's bigger caliber twin brother the G23. The G19/23 pistol size is the best compromise.

Of the 2 Gen4 Glocks that I have, the 22 is very good and the 21 is really fantastic, it shoots crappy Tula "trashcans" beautifully, this stuff I wouldn't feed to my 1911s on a dare. What the Gen4 gives you, I don't think you need on any of the 9mm variants, I'd rather have a Gen3

Got a Gen 4 G27

I think I ended up answering myself in my own question . I went with the G27. I have the big brother G22 and already have the G17 and G26 . So this makes sense to me . Here it is . Thanks for the input guys and gals .

Glock 23 .40S&W gen 04 ......

I didn't see it listed but the Glock 23 gen 04 .40 is more modular and is more "one size fits all roles" than the other models. :D
The Glock 23 can be converted to .22LR(with a kit), the 9x19mm or the .357sig.
The pistol can also take white lights & laser aimers(unlike the sub compact 27).
The 23 fits most shooters hands & can be carried open or concealed.

The Glock 23 series(19/23/32) can be used in many holsters & gear is easy to find for most CCW users or armed professionals.

Of the guns you listed in the poll the Gen4 G19 would be my choice. It's the next gun I'm gonna buy as well to compliment my Gen4 G26 and G42.

VooDoo

I am not sure if a handgun in 9mm or 45 S&W has sufficient power for "the woods". I would choose hot 10mm for that application; standard defensive 10mm is just fine for personal defense. So, the answer to the question is: none of the above.

If I were to buy one to complement the Glock 26, I'd choose the Glock 19. This is a great combination that covers most personal defense situations.

I'm late to the game on this thread and the OP made his decision but I was recently looking at a new high capacity carry piece which came down to a G19 Gen 3/4 or a Ruger 9E. In my case, it was $500 vs. $350 so I opted the Ruger. No regrets as she has a great feel in my hand and that 17+1 will get someone's attention.

Budget issues; Glock 19/23 size.....

$ of budgets can be a serious issue for many gun owners or armed professionals but there are many, many police trade-in & military surplus Glocks out there. ;)
I've seen Glock 27, 23/22s, 21s in very good or like new condition for prices that range from $429.00 to $550.00 USD(some Glocks have factory new night sights).
My Glock 21 .45acp was about $500.00 total. It was a generation four, with 3 dot Glock night sights. The trade in pistol was a factory re-hab. It came with 03 new Glock 13rd .45acp magazines. The case was okay but I replaced it with a after market style from Bass Pro Shop, ;)
Glock 23s or 27s can be switched quickly. For the extra $100-150.00 you get a well made semi auto that can shoot 3/4 different calibers. You can buy holsters, accessories & after market parts quickly. Many that you(the Glock owner) can install by yourself. :D
www.glockstore.com www.brownells.com & www.glockworx.com are useful.
So is Morgan Boatman's site: www.CustomizeyourGlock.com . Boatman goes into detail about repairs, custom choices, cleaning, etc.
I have no problem with the Ruger SR series but don't over-look the LE trade in Glocks or the new in box models.

To me the best size Glock is the 19/23 size. The cover the broadest range of uses I vote G23, didn't see that on the list though.
