Howdy folks. This is my first post. :)

I recently purchased my first firearm, a Glock 19, and so far I'm very satisfied.

Anyways, you know how the trigger must be in the rear position to remove the slide? Well, the first time I attempted to field strip the pistol I accidentally retracted the slide too far, thereby moving the trigger to the forward position. I didn't immediately realize this, however, and commenced to push down the slide lock and attempt to separate the slide from the frame. Although the slide moved forward a tad, it wouldn't come off, of course. I wouldn't say that I tried to force it off, but I did apply some firm pressure before realizing my mistake.

Which brings me to my questions. Could I have damaged something while I was trying to remove the slide with the trigger in the forward position? Mechanically speaking, what prevents the slide from being removed while in this state? Is this a safety feature, or just incidental to the design?

That won't hurt a glock

Welcome to the forum:D

Mechanically speaking, just incidental to the design.

When the trigger is forward, the sear bar is re-set and the striker in the slide is being held by it, just as if it were trying to partially cock the striker normally when the slide went into battery.

If it happens again, just pull the slide back, snap the trigger, and start over again.

Does it have a standard connector and trigger spring?

If you have a NY1 or NY2 trigger spring, you have to pull the trigger again when the slide is stuck a quarter of the way forward when removing it.

And by the way, it takes more super human strength to destroy your Glock through a field strip.

Thanks, everybody, for the replies. You've confirmed my suspicion that I was fretting needlessly. What can I say? I like to take care of my equipment and the words "Do not use force" in the manual made me think that I'd unwittingly abused my new baby. :p

rcmodel,

Thanks for the clear explanation - exactly what I wanted to know. It seems perfectly obvious now that you mention it.

CountGlockula,

The trigger is standard.
