I am still trying to feel good about buying myself a hand gun for home defense and to shoot for practice and enjoyment when I have the time.

I have owned and still own Glock. I have had a Berretta 9MM.

I have done about a months research on 1911's of all makes and price ranges, but just don't like the thought of cocked and locked single action 1911's. The realiability of all 1911's seems to be an issue from the 500.00 cheapo's to the 2000.00-3,000.00 LB, Wilson's and I don't think I am ready to spend that much money on a 1911 of any brand to only have it FTF, FTE, and on and on when my life and my family's life is in danger.

While I saw less problems with the higher priced 1911's they still had their share and for that kind of money, I would just put a Glock in every room for reliabilty even though I don't hold them or shoot them very well. My hands are way too big.

With all this said, I had a Sig P220 Elite Stainless steel in my hands and it felt great. I have heard of Sig firearms, but I am not sure how reliable they are and how well they shoot and if they have solid customer service? Again I am very interested in the Sig P220 Elite all Stainless steel model with rosewood grips. Not sure how much they cost and again how reliable this gun is, but I just can't bring myself to drop from 1200.00-3000.00 for a 1911 and the cost and reliability issues. I know too many of them need to be broken in and you have to find the right kind of ammo, the right magazine for them to shoot reliably and I just don't have the money, patience, or willigness to bet my family's and my life on them.

Tell me what you guys think and I am looking for a great gun choice besides 1911's. I have heard enough about 1911's and want to look at other more reliable choices please with no offense. If I where to buy a 1911 today, it would be the Kimber SIS Custom. Even though it has been better in perfromance than other models I have seen from Kimber, still seeing FTE issues. Kimber is taking care if it, but I am buying a gun to shoot and to protect, not send back to the factory. I am listening guys.

Thank you in advance and for you Sig owners, especially the Elite series, tell me what you think and how customer service had dealt with an issues you have had??

I didn't buy a 1911 until I'd had about four years of heavy hand gunning and reloading. I found Sig, BHP, Beretta, Glock and CZs to be very reliable and quite accurate. I probably got more miles for the dollars out of a 9mm CZ75BD with the .22 Kadet Kit than any other two guns. Still have it and compete in speed steel with the 9mm. I have a few 1911s now. You shouldn't worry about the 1911 at this point. If you get the bug and have some extra dollars down the road get a Les Baer.

I have heard of Sig firearms, but I am not sure how reliable they are
1911, Glocks, XDs, I've seen them all go back to the factory or defective parts replaced by a 'smith.

Broken Sigs are like ten second Civics. I've heard about them on the internet, but I've never actually seen one. While at the range one day I heard someone say that "to hell and back reliabilty isnt a slogan, its a reputation." He was shooting the worst looking P220 I'd ever seen. It ran like a top, and he shot it very well.

Thanks for the replies so far guys, but no 1911

stuff please with no offense intended. I am not interested in hearing about 1911's, been there and done that. Sig's and other brands please besides Glock because I already know about and own Glocks. Looking for 45ACP and hearing about Sig's, especially Elite's. Thanks guys...

You say that Glocks don't fit your hand very well, but let me ask this: does the 1911 fit your hand? That's going to impact the recommendations you get.

While Sigs are good, they are also pricey. For roughly the same amount as a Glock, a S&W M&P or Springfield Armory XD both come in .45ACP and feel good to this 1911 user. CZ has a .45ACP model, but it is single action, and as you said, you aren't comfortable with that idea.

There must be at least one person in the world who bought a P220 and was unhappy with it. Statistics would tell us that. However, if he started a "Sig Haters" club, there's a good chance that he'd be there serving beers to himself alone all night. I've shot a friend's P220 and was very impressed. He absolutely loved it. I can't ever recall hearing anyone complain about their P220.

If you're looking for input on other .45s, if it was my money and I could only buy one (Heaven forbid) it'd be a H&K USP. I carry the .45 USP Compact as my favorite weapon. I like it better than my Glocks, my XD, or any of my wheelguns. The XD is a great gun, it points and shoots well. However the USP has a great trigger, fantastic controls (I love the mag release) and I like to have the option of DA or cocked & locked carry.

I would just put a Glock in every room for reliabilty even though I don't hold them or shoot them very well. My hands are way too big.
I have to ask....do you own a Glock 21?

The G21 has the largest grip of any Glock that I have ever held, and if your hands are too big for that then maybe try the HK USP.

If you don't want to hear about 1911s then don't put them in your thread title, and don't devote three paragraphs of your original post to flaming them. The only 1911 I've had real problems with was a Sig GSR.

Now, that out of the way, other than their 1911s, Sig makes great guns. The 220 is great, but can be pricey. If you want .45 ACP you might look at 3rd Generation metal frame S&W autos such as the 4506 or similar 45xx series guns for less money than a Sig. They're very tough & durable, and have a slide mounted safety/decocker like on your Beretta. The Ruger P series autos are also good choices for less money.

I have to ask....do you own a Glock 21?

A very good question....what Glock do you have now? The G20/21 guns have a big grip frame that most folks with big hands do like.

You say you don't shoot your Glock very well. Why not? They are great shooters....do you use the trigger reset? Or are you letting the trigger go all the way forward after each shot and then pulling it all the way back again to fire the next shot like double action revolver?

I've never had to send my 1911 back to the "Factory"... and it goes bang every time...

Wonder where all this "Unreliable" talk comes from?

Probably the same place as one inch groups at 1000 yards with a bone stock remington 700 30-06 and blowing someones arm off with a desert eagle... oh yea... the internet, thats right!

On a more serious note, I have never shot the P220, but have shot the P226 numerous times and I find it to be a very nice firearm. Feels great, great control in the .40 offering and looks very nice. Never had any problems while running it on the range. (This was the P226 Elite BTW).

The Ruger P345 is a nice piece...

I have a 1911 and it's a great gun. But I am seriously thinking about getting a CZ-75 next. I haven't fired one, but I've checked them out and they feel good. I've heard good things about them too.

Go to a shop and check out different guns. Your hand will probably pick out a favorite.

Hey ugaarguy, If you don't like my post

then don't read it. I did not trash anything and if I want to write 15 friggin paragraphs, I will. The last time I looked this is still America.

I simply stated how I felt after much research on 1911's and I was very clear I was not interested in 1911's. I don't have to explain to you my reason for doing so, but your ^((&&*% response is typical and why I did so. Enough said.

If the moderator wants to kick me off the board for setting this jerk straight, then do what you have to do. I am not going to take this crap off anyone who thinks he is all knowing and 10 foot tall behind his keyboard.

It is sad you can't ask an honest question about a specific need and get a jerk like this try to... well be a jerk. There were plenty other good responses and for those replies, I appreciate your information and feed back.

I have never been disrespectful to anyone on this board or tried to start or cause any problems...and I don't appreciate it being directed at me for no reason because this guy is a quote senior member!!

Thanks for the replies from

folks who understood I was no longer interested in 1911's. I have nothing personal against 1911's. I just don't want to buy a single action firearm and that was the purpose of asking for input from folks who owned other types of firearms, especially Sig P220's.

I have onwed and still own Glocks but as I said before or thought I said, they just don't fit my larger hands well and I have looked at XD, M&P's etc etc as well.

The only gun I held in my hand that felt really good, and the feel of the gun is important to me, was a P220 Sig. I was hoping to get more feedback from Sig owners, and maybe some will still come.

I am open to CZ and others, just waiting to hear some suggestions from real owners and for that reason I am keeping my options open.

If I purchased a gun today, it would be a Sig P220 Elite Stainless steel w/rosewood grips. I have had the all black model in my hands and hope to shoot one soon. I am just hoping for some actual owners to post about their experiences with this model gun. They are on back order from Sig for 4-6 weeks. So it is either a great gun, or not very popular....grin. Thanks again guys

I think the Glock and 1911 are more similar than they are different. They are the designs I trust most. Followed closely by Sig. The Glock and 1911 are slightly prefered by me because trigger pull is the same for every shot. I can't remember ever having a malfunction with any of my 1911's. Mine are not high end guns. A Springfield, Kimber Custom II, and 2 Colt 1991 models. I don't have $2000 in the 4 of them combined.

The last time I looked we were on the internet. You also have a selective memory. You said:

Sounds like trash talkin' to me. I'll put more importance on 100 years of service with 70 of them being issued to our troops in 2 world wars, Korea, Vietnam, etc. and my experience to your hours of research any day.

I love my P226, and I thoroughly enjoyed the P226 Elite and P220 I shot. My simple logic tells me the P220 Elite is sure to be a winner. :)

The P220 Stainless Elite is pretty much the cream of the crop, as far as .45 Sigs go (IMO). And if you want, you can even have it converted to 10mm. :D

I shot my 220 very well. A shooting buddy of mine could not believe the groups I could shoot with until he shot it. It was well built and I loved the all black finish. But all in all, it just did not do it for me and I sold it. I sometimes wish I hadn't. :banghead:

Hey Jasper, you have your

right to your opinions, but you couldn't be further from the truth acusing me of trashing 1911's.

I posted what I have found in my research and why others don't want to go down the 1911 road as well. You don't have to like or agree with it. If you want to respond to the actual questions I ask, feel free, if not move on and add me to your ignore list like I just did you.

Your more interested in granstanding and trying to disrespect posters on the internet and this board than being helpful and answering the questions asked.

Thanks K9 and Chem and oither for actually reading

and responding to my questions instead of raming 1911's down my throat. It is appreciated. I am done with this thread so again thanks guys, I will check out Sigs on other sites and do some research on my own. I appreciate all who replied to the questions asked. Have fun shooting

In that same vein, if you don't like his response, you don't have to reply to it.

This is the high road. It may not be the place for you if you can't take a mild rebuke. He asked you not to flame, and you calling him names and making assumptions.

I am not going to take this crap off anyone who thinks he is all knowing and 10 foot tall behind his keyboard.

Thing is, if you stick around, you'll find that there are a LOT of members with a LOT of experience to draw on. You'll also find that there a BUNCH of members that have BTDT. Granted we still have our share of computerchair commandos.

I have never been disrespectful to anyone on this board or tried to start or cause any problems...and I don't appreciate it being directed at me for no reason because this guy is a quote senior member!!

First off, I personally didn't see anything that was disrespectful, nor anything that would cause problems in the two sentences he wrote.

Post count, is all that deals with being a senior member. But what gets me is join date. You've "technically" been here about a month. (Yes I know you could have lurked for a time prior to that) But until recently you haven't contributed. Get a feel for the place, read the rules.

4.) Spamming, trolling, flaming, and personal attacks are prohibited. You can disagree with other members, even vehemently, but it must be done in a well-mannered form. Attack the argument, not the arguer.

If you think you were disrespected? You should check out a few of the other threads. There are a couple P210 v 1911 heated arguments.

Your opinion is just as valid as his. There will be people with whom you agree and people that prove themselves to be idiots who think that their opinion far outweighs your own.
