My girl and I will be attending the Appleseed Shoot in Evansville on the 8'th of November! We are both excited about it! :D

Iv read the "what to bring" section of their website, and iv got all of the non- gun related stuff, and Iv got plenty of ammo for us both, but iv got some questions for the guns themselves.

I don't think they encourage scopes at these events, and a lot of my guns are hunting rifles with no irons. Iv only got 5 rifles that qualify:

* Savage MII FVT with adjustable Williams peep sights.
* Ruger 10/22, factory irons. (I'm wiling to purchase Tech Sights just for this)
* Swedish M38 Mauser
* Enfield No.4
* Vector AK-47

Obviously magazines arent an issue with the Mauser and Enfield, but they are for the other 3. I have 5 magazines for the AK, but only 4 for the 10/22 and 3 for the Savage. I can get more magazines for the Ruger and Savage at Walmart though, so I'm not worried about that.

She has shot my 10/22 several times before, and she enjoys that. I think I'll let her shoot that, and Ill shoot the Enfield.

Do any previous attendees have suggestions for me? :)

I went to one in Wisconsin this spring. I should have practiced the positions beforehand and paid for not doing so.

I also should have brought a rifle with scope. The smaller targets on the !AQT, the Redcoats, and the darn black squares, were hard for me to see. My eyes are more than 50 years old, however. My son, 16, had no trouble with the irons on my AR15 clone.

I was under the impression that scoped weapons were not allowed, but I guess the web site doesn't actually say that anywhere.

Scopes are fine. As for a rifle, any semi-auto with detachable mags (10 rounds or more) should work well for you. I would think twice about using a bolt action rifle becasue many of the shooting drills call for rapid fire and reloading. Its possible though, especially if you are proficient with the rifle. At the Appleseed I went to, a kid about 13 years old scored as a rifleman with a bolt action .22LR. The 10/22 is a perfect setup for an appleseed shoot.

I shot at the Manchester, TN shoot last weekend. Lots of fun, nice people, and I learned a lot.

Scopes are fine at Appleseed. Bipods aren't.

Most people were shooting 10/22s, and the staff were raffling off a 10/22 as a fundraiser. All three of the people who shot Rifleman in Manchester used 10/22s with the standard carbine-length tapered barrel.

Tech-Sights are a must (or use a scope). An extended magazine release is highly recommended.

Standard 10 round magazines are fine. There is no course that requires more than 10 rounds except the first and last 13 round courses. Those aren't scored and they expect you to change magazines for them. You will need a second magazine for courses that require mag changes, and a backup magazine or two is highly recommended. In fact, keep a loaded spare on the mat in case you have a magazine problem. (I had several, including one during the qualification on the second day.)

A military-style web sling and sling swivels on the rifle are an absolute must. All the shooting is done in a sling and they'll teach both hasty sling and loop sling.

To protect your elbows either wear a long sleeve shirt or use elbow pads. Not big bulky ones. Just athletic Lycra elbow pads.

I've got writeups on the 10/22:

and natural point of aim:

I am jealous. Evansville is going to be a big shoot. HAVE FUN!!
I would take the 10/22 (with Tech-Sights), the Enfield and the AK. If you have done some rifle shooting before, you may be good enough with the bolt on the enfield. If you are having problems, switch to AK. The caveat is the shorter sight radius on the AK, and a nastier trigger pull. Remember this, many many Rifleman scores have been posted with AKs and Enfields. The shooting is up to you.

Once again, have fun! RWVA has put a lot into this shoot, so it should be great. I wish I could go.

id take the ak and 10/22

scopes are fine, NO BIPODS a guy at mine in august had one and they told him not to use it but he did anyways.. he scored rifleman but they wouldnt give him it since he used the bipod

pivk up 2 of the old o.d. green nylon slings from a surplus store or off the net they help alot

i used what i had so i took a tube fed .22lr which wasnt best it was actually a real pain no mat,no sling, no elbow pads

they jerry rigged me a sling, had a shooting mat i could use, and i borrowed a pair of elbow pads from dragin wood(odd nick name but you will learn what it means) it was awsome but my elbows were raw after the first day, bring water they will have some probably but id make sure to bring some, mres are great for lunch, most important be ready to drop your old habbits and pick up new ones

p.s.i learned this the hard way bring elbow pads and a shooting mat

Thanks! I picked up a second 10/22 about an hour ago.

Unless I can cough up the money for a pair of Tec Sights, we will probably both use scopes.

Ill work on getting some slings on them. :)

Come to think of it, the 10/22 doesn't have any swivel screws with which to mount a sling

Anyone have kit for this?

Leave the Mauser, Enfield and AK at home. Many of your drills are timed and prone, so bolt actions and large mag semiautos wouldn't work. Not sure what the Savage is.

Good job on getting the second 10/22. Definitely the best setup. Don't take the scopes, just use iron sights or get the TechSights if you can afford them.

Be sure to get an actual GI sling. Not a hunting one, not the leather 19-something version. Nylon or canvas GI web.

Elbow/knee pads...nah. Just get a camping mat with decent padding.

Use earplugs. Muffs get in the way of the stock, especially when prone. CLUNK!

That's about all I can think of. Maybe some extra magazines.

Mr. Trooper,

Thanks for coming down to E'ville! I'll be one of the instructors (the one with a green hat). The 10/22s are great, try to get Tech Sights on them or scopes, the factory sights are a bear to adjust accurately. Have at least 3 mags per rifle in case one goes down. Bring lots of ammo (500 rounds/rifle).

What part of the state are you coming from? Wherever it is, load up the car(s) with family and friends and make a weekend of it. Red Brush is a great range to shoot on.

Uncle Mike makes a good sling swivel for your USGI sling, just make sure to get the 1 1/4 inch model. Someone mentioned getting stretched out, now is a good time to start, three times a week 10 minutes a night, prone and cross legged sitting.

Any questions, holler,

hawk will be the shoot boss (just found that out) he will be your friend and your executioner lol word to the wise 1 safetly violationa nd you are out or atleast thats what it was for us, put you saftey on when you finish and inseft the chamber flag alot of us figured that with the chamber flag we didnt need to worry about the safety but they want it on

the stretching is agood idea i didnt and man at the end of the day half wat through shooting the bottom of the aqt i would get cramps in my bad knee(ha and im only 18) so be sure to stretch

hawk were you at the ramseur shoot in august?

Bring elbow and knee pads!!

I went about a year ago and brought my Bulgarian AK and my 10/22.
I got close to Rifleman scores with the AK on day one and switched to the 10/22 on day two and got my Rifleman patch with no problem.
The AK isn't the most accurate platform to use.
Go buy or borrow another 10/22 if you have to. Mine is the basic Wal-Mart carbine 10/22 and was perfect for the shoot.

the Ruger is a good choice for her, with the Tech-Sight installed
and i would add a reddot to the Vector AK and you're good to go.

paintballdude902,

Glad you made it! Hope you learned a thing or two. :)

Remember the seventh step and pitch in.

Nope, I haven't made the pilgrimmage to Rasseur yet, but I do wan to give that KD range a work out down the road. Ramseur in 09!

hawk i always remember the 7th step last week at the gun show i think i got about 4 people interested in going to a shoot

2009 if im back from alaska ill be there for the shoot, if they do another boot camp ill be therefor that too

mount a scope off of swivel screws?! i assume you mean bipod?

( Ps are you trooper from ZS?)

HAHA yea, i meant mount a SLING off of the swivel screws. There is a possible attachment point at the barrel band, but other than that, the 10/22 has no sling swivel screws. I would have to drill and mount new ones. And yea, im the Same Trooper from ZS. :)

Thank you Hawk! Im from Elkhart, so we will be making the grand tour of the state to come and join you. Thanks for the suggestions! ill be sure to have plenty of magazines and ammo.

Iv got about a month to come up with the scratch for a pair of Tec Sights, so i think i can pull it off. Ill see ya' there! :)
