I live in Oregon and i will be going to Vegas with the family in less then a month.I cant take a firearm to protect us.Im curious to what anyone can suggest that i can keep in the car with me that I could use in a self defence situation.I dont care to spend over 100 dollars if possible.but would if i have to.My family meens more to me then 100 dollars but That would cut into my gambling fund :).Thanks for any suggestions.

I live in Las Vegas. Nevada is still part of the wild west, and most of our firearms laws reflect that.

Clark County, which is Las Vegas, is pretty gun-friendly. Non-residents don't have to register their guns (Las Vegas residents do :cuss: ), and as long as your weapon is unloaded in the trunk of your car, you're fine to travel.

Here's a letter I found on www.packing.org concerning non-residents bringing their firearms to NV.

If in doubt, email someone with the Metro Sheriff's Office. Their website is www.lvmpd.com

Hope this helps.

Does Nevada issue permits to out of staters?

I seem to remember that most Casinos have a "no firearms" policy, is that policy legally enforcable? (i.e. is it an actual CRIME to carry into a casino?)

Note: I never saw ANYONE ever get searched for weapons in a casino, noone ever asked me if I had one, nor did they tell me that I couldnt. I suspect that they have a bit of a "don't ask don't tell" policy.

That thing that says non-residents have to lock up their guns is a new one on me. No state law even addresses guns in vehicles so if there is something like that it's a city law only. I'd like to find out more about that!

There are non-resident permits, and you can carry in casinos as they're not posted. They don't like it but they don't stop it either.

Open carry is legal, but don't try it on The Strip.

LVMPD does issue out of state permits, but you have to take a class and then they take the full amount of time (and then some) they legally have to issue the permit--not an option for a trip less than 30 days away.

North Las Vegas has particullarly UNfriendly peacable journey laws--stay out of there anyway.

My understanding is that you can keep a loaded weapon in your car, just not in NLV or Boulder City (If you decide to take the dam tour, from the dam guide or visit the dam store).

Good luck!

Yep, to get a permit you have to take a 8 hour class and then go down to the fingerprint place and you ain't doing it all in one day! :) Then deliver all docs to the main police station. I took the class on a Saturday and turned the paperwork in on Tuesday after spending ALL DAY Monday in the old fingerprint place downtown. Mine is a non-resident permit, and I'll just keep it until it runs out (3 years vs. 5 years for a resident).

The "keep it in your trunk" stuff errs on the side of caution.

In Las Vegas a NV resident can keep a loaded weapon in their vehicle. You can open carry, but be prepared to be looked at crosseyed (we have a lot of Kali refugees).

Out-of-staters can get a CCW permit. It expires every three years.

You basically can't bring a firearm into any private establishment with posted signs. Gov't buildings, schools, airports, etc. are also on the no-no list. Unless casinos have a posted sign, you can CCW if you have a permit. Same with banks, churches, bars, and the like.

Henderson, North Las Vegas, and Boulder City all have some funny-bunny gun ordinances, and that's where the lock-it-in-your trunk part comes into play.

Didnt' mean to sew confusion. Again, email LVMPD, and you should get a straight answer.

That's probably a great reason for a non-resident to get a permit - if you do go into say NLV with your gun you are legal with a carry license. Without it you're in deep dodo if you get caught. You'll know if you stray into NLV as the street signs turn from green to blue.

The only casino I know of that ever posted signs was Binion's but then they closed. Haven't been downtown since they reopened so I don't know if it's still posted.

Do NOT go even a hare over the speed limit in Nevada.

I was going 65 in a 55 - down a freeway in the middle of nowhere in the desert - past a cop going the other and got a $250 ticket. :cuss: That was almost 10 years ago, so I'm sure it's gone up.

In the small towns (you can tell it's a town in Nevada because there's one bright pink house full of women at one end of town and on bright yellow house full of women at the other end of town - I never figured out what they did ;) ... other than that, it's just more desert), the speed limit is 25 and I had cops give me the "thumbs down" to slow down going 29 mph.

Not every town is like that, although I'm sure some are. These days the highway patrol is so understaffed you usually don't see them much. In Tonopah one day we saw a bike cop stopping cars, and then he came over to take a break where we had our bikes parked. He told us he didn't give a ticket unless they went 50, and the limit was 25. I was suprised by that.

Here in Vegas they're so understaffed they've taken to ganging up on intersections with 2 bikes at each corner and someone watching the traffic and telling them who to go after. Lots of red light runners here.

Just thought i would bump my own thread.Im also going to be driving through California to get there.I am basicly looking for something other then a firearm. Thanks for the replys guys.

You could do what I used to do and carry a gun locked in a case. Then when you hit the NV line unlock and load the gun. Going back to CA I'd unload and lock it up again. Thank God I don't have to do that anymore! :)

other than a firearm, (which is why this is in the non-firearms section :neener: ) i'd think a cane would work well, like Cold Steel's City Stick. that's about $80. fill in the last $20 with shipping charges and maybe some good OC spray, if that's allowed. then add a knife (again, if that's allowed). maybe a heavy flashlight? blunt force weapon, and it could be shined in attacker's eyes. would be especially effective if it's nighttime or it's dark inside. and remember, the casino's have TONS of security- cameras everywhere, as well as security guards, some may be in plainclothes.
