Golf Balls for Targets

This thread is funny because I was cleaning and actually found a zip lock freezer bag full of golf balls and was thinking about taking them out to shoot 'em up.

I would love to see a row of golf balls attached by some shock cord, I guess if you drill a hole and super glue some round shock cord it would work, and just hang them with a foot or so of shock cord from a frame.

Either that or have a block of styrofoam to get them off the ground a bit and just stick them in the foam. They won't move around so much of course then.

Zombie thread. It lives again.

The OP might better have shot the golf clubs, and put the game out of our misery. :neener:

The 2 clubs I belong to prohibit shooting at junk on the ground. I might be able to convince the club BoD's or the RO's that golf balls hanging from my target frame at the impact berm is kosher until target material going over the berm is observed. Or, at 10 yds, coming back at the shooter?
No thanks,
You guys have fun.

So now I can go shoot a few rounds of golf. I never liked that game till you guys explained it.

SICK OF PICKING THEM UP ????

Drill a small hole about 1/4-1/8 deep in the ball then screw one of those fish eye screws in it (the small ones that you use to hang a picture frame) then you can hang them from your target stand. I have shot them 3-4 times with a .308 before they fall off or explode.

F.Y.I. a golf ball is about 1 1/2 inch so at 100 yds they are about 1.5 MOA if you hit it (Good training)

Have Fun

I thought they was little birds, them golfs. Didn't know if you use a shotgun or a rifle

GBs are a lot of fun. We shoot them at 300+ yards all the time. We also shoot much smaller things like coins (not US minted ones, but ...).

^Okay, that is one cool toy I'd have difficulty getting to the range on my motorcycle.

...

However I think I would be willing to break out the car for that.

I was just thinking today about shooting golf balls with a .270. I thought it would make a fun and challenging target at a distance. I'm going to have to give it a try now.

I have a fond memory, out shooting with my Dad. He hit a golf ball with his .22 sending it flying in the air... and hit it again before it fell!

He says it was just a lucky shot, but I've been trying to repeat it for about 35 years. I think I got close once.

My father-in-law gave me 5 gallon buckets of balls that were too cut up to take to the course. They made fun targets!

Holy thread resurection! This is a blast from the past. Well, I still shoot at golf balls. Still miss more then I hit, but it never gets old! As to shooting my golf clubs, don't think that the thought hasn't crossed my mind a few times when I'm out on the course. :scrutiny:

We put a wood screw in the golf balls, then hung them under the target board with fishing line. Shooting at 100 yards with a pretty brisk cross wing, I hit mine with my an AR I have set up for 3 gun matches (16" med weight barrel free floating with a Leatherwood 1.5X6 scope) on the second shot. The bullet penetrated (not a center hit, but about 10:00) and knocked the screw out. Another ball was hit with a .308 dead center and the bullet (150gr spitzer) did not penetrate.

Loads of fun!

Hello all,
At my range people leave shotgun shells at some of the stations we shoot at, so with golf balls and empty shotgun shells:neener:

When training new shooters I set the golf balls on top of the shotgun shells and at whatever distance the new shooter wants they can shoot the balls off of the shell or the shells out from under the balls for the first few magazines, then the next round they have to step back a few feet, and so on.

Once everone is up to speed then we see who can hit them at the farthest distance.:D

When I play golf I use Pro V-1's, and that would make for some expensive targets...

I'm sure I have some range balls around here. I think I may give this a shot next trip to the range!

I've heard tennis balls make fun targets, they are cheaper and bigger to hit as well.

If you don't want to make your own and don't mind paying a couple bucks more, you can go to a sporting goods store and buy a set of "ladder golf" balls. It's 2 golf balls, one attached to each end of a small rope about 2 feet long. You can cut the rope in the middle and you have two targets ready to hang up, or simply hang the 2-ball rope as-is. Also, the ladder golf balls tend to be very bright colors so they're easy to see way down range.
