I am looking at the S&W Sigma 40VE,Ruger SR40, and S&W SD40.
Still researching and looking but do any of you have any recommendations for a good 40 S&W under $450 for home defense/car gun?

The Sigma is a very good buy, although the trigger takes some getting used to.

I picked up a Walter PPQ for $444 out the door at a gun show a few weeks ago.

I paid $400 NIB for my CZ P07 in .40 and I think it's fantastic in pretty much every way for the price. I haven't shot the Ruger but I definitely recommend the CZ over the S&Ws

I traded my sigma almost as quickly as I bought it. It was a nice buy but I went to the M&P very quickly... It's a few extra bucks but much more worth it.

Smith and Wesson 4006. 3rd generation S&W. Heavy, accurate, reliable and I think you can find them used for around $300 or so.

Best deal in the 40 s&w market IMO.

All of the half dozen Sigma's I've owned have been the best, high cap, lifetime warranty, semi's for the money.

I paid $220 for my last one...had hardly been fired.

If you don't like the trigger:
call S&W customer srvc
tell them it's "rough and gritty"
DO NOT tell them it's "stiff"
they'll email free postage
about a month later it'll show back up at your door
night and day difference

I like the sr40 out of the group but, I'd save the extra money (I get my glocks for $420) and get a glock 22/23/27.

IMHO the S&W SD40 is the best by in that type of pistol by far. I got mine for $399, it has a way better trigger than the Sigma, has steel sights and a front night sight, as well as a nice melonite coating, all in a proven reliable design. Hard to beat for the $!!

Beretta 96. S&W 4006 or similar variant. SW99-40.

Save up a few more dollars and look for a CPO SIG P229 that often show up for around $500 - you will NOT be disappointed and then own one of the best .40 pistols ever that was designed as a .40 pistol.
