Hey guys, I have been a good boy this year, so among one other planned gun purchase, I am looking at buying myself a new bolt action rifle, and have decided on .223 Rem. I have a Mini-14, but we all now what tack drivers they are, so it's bolt time. I have a Remington 700 ADL in .270 that has been a great deer rifle, but I want a good gun to carry around in the truck with me that is somewhat lightweight (flexible on this), accurate, and hopefully under $500. I am planning on shooting some coyotes with this as well, so as far as hunting goes, that will be all the hunting it does along with some varminting :D

Here is kind of what I have it narrowed down to, and I would appreciate all opinions on these, fellas.

Ruger M77 - All weather or Ultralight.
Remington 700 - Several models
Savage, but I recently realized I HATE their synthetic stock.

If you want to take some time to get away from that annoying relative this holiday weekend, answer away! :D Thanks.

I wish you had posted your invitation yesterday. With a living room full of in-laws, I could have used a break from all the cackling ladies... :uhoh:

Why izzit the Remington 700 is always mentioned as an option when people are considering rifle purchases but never the Winchester Model 70???

Boy I love a ruger M77. Smoothest action out of the box if you ask me.

Talked to a local smith today (asked him who he thought had the best out of the box accuracy) that builds all kind of custom accuracy builds. He recommended in this order....
Tikka
Savage
Rem 700

I am still leaning towards a heavy barrel M77 for my next one. Seems they all have shortcomings. The Rugers dont have much of a trigger, savage needs a stock. Remingtons need several things depending on who you ask.

Don't know the first thing about a Tikka.

The CZ 527 Lux has won more awards in the Light rifle category in Europe than any other rifle ever! Designed to fit the small base calibers perfectly, the CZ 527 is a true micro length action and features controlled round feed, a detachable magazine, hammer forged barrel, single set trigger and open sights. The stock is Turkish walnut and is the famous Bavarian pattern.

Because Winchesters suck. Just kidding. I don't know about anyone else, but I have always been a big Remington man, and I am just now venturing outside of my "safe zone". Sure, I have other make rifles. The CZ has never done anything for me because of the way the magazine is set up. Just don't care for the looks though I have heard great things about their accuracy. You should be able to custom order your gun from the factory to suit your needs. I know you can for extra money or from a custom shop but it would be nice to say "Yes, I would like a Remington 700 in .223, no iron sights, laminated stock, please." Or "Yes, I would like the Ruger All Weather in .204 but with blued rings instead of stainless, please."

I hate decision making, it really sucks!

I never liked the Remingtons because

1. Everybody around here has one. In .270.
2. The cheaper guns are just that. Fit and finish is negligible. Add the blind magazine of the ADL.

I personally have always preferred the M70, especially the newer Classic Actions in featherweight. Prettiest gun around. Now I'm on the CZ bandwagon, with a few mausers thrown in.

+1 for Savage. I have one in .223 now and it is a tack driver out of the box. I got mine as a "package" with a scope included for $449. A fine shooter and a real value in my book.

Remington 700 VS or a Rock River AR-15 with 20" barrel.

The most accurate .223 I have shot is my Remington. It is not a light rifle with the heavy barrel but it comes out of the box with an aluminum bedded action and a fully adjustable trigger.

You should take a look at some of the AR's out there.
My buddy got this one last year for Christmas and it is VERY accurate:

They claim a 1" MOA and I have shot better with the gun. The two stage trigger is sweet! He got his from http://www.eaglefirearms.net/Rock River Arms Rifles.htm

Oh, I forgot to add that the CZ is not a bad choice either. I have shot a friends and it's a nice rifle, just not my style.

I am not a big Ruger fan, but I have an M77 ultralight in 223 that I picked up used some years ago that is very accurate and functions flawlessly. I did fiddle with the bedding just a bit, but now it sends Black Hills blue box softpoints downrange with remarkable accuracy. It will string vertically if you heat the barrel up, but for a walking varminter it does a nice job. Also haven't tried the heavier bullets that many like for long ranges.

The Tikka T3 lite stainless does a nice job in 308, but I have never shot a 223 version.

I have the CZ 527 FS in 223. Love it. Haven't had a chance to put a scope on it yet so i can't tell you how accurate it is. But i know the 527's are capable of unbelievable accuracy. (i've seen one print a .33" group at 100 yards with factory ammo) The full stock doesn't make the gun nose heavy either. As for the magazine I like having a detachable mag on a hunting rifle. You step out of the woods open the bolt and pop the mag and you're now leagle to cross the road. The set trigger is pretty cool too.

Sold! What, I can't have yours? Ok, guess I'll have to build my own. That is the Duramax stock right? What colors do those come in? I sure like the looks of that. Is that Black Hills Match? Thanks! :D

yes, its a duramaxx. they come in several colors. it could shoot 1/2" with the original stock. but after getting the duramaxx, and then, having it bedded, it shoots more consistent.

black Hills Match 68gr. blue box(remanufactured)

Warning: Do not buy a Savage 10FP in .223.....because a little while later you'll end up with a Savage 10FP in .308 to go with it! :D

Best group to date from the .223 is .430" at 200 yards. The .308 has had less than 100 rounds put through it, but has turned in a best group of .394 at 100 yards in a crosswind.
