I noticed that ammoman.com has Golden Tiger at $189/1000rds and that is shipped. I've been using Barnaul's Brown Bear which has been very good so far and paid about the same price as this. Who makes Golden Tiger? Anyone have experience with it?

Golden Tiger is from Vampel, its better then Ulyanovsk by a long shot in my book. I have shot several thousand of the golden tiger in just about everything in 7.62x39, it has only been replaced recently with the Romanian "Hot Shot" which is from Sadu arsenal in romania and i find it to be better performing at more consistant then Vympel stuff. That said i never thought Barnual was much, or any, better then the Vampel stuff. Tula and Ulyanovsk have been just plain crappy in terms of squibbs, failure to fires, and so on. I have never had one of those with Vympel, Barnual or the stuff from Sadu.

I believe aim has the Vympel enterprises stuff (Golden Tiger) for $159/1000

The best steel cased x39 out there today, well at least in my book, (the Romanian "hot shot" x39 from Sadu) is $139/700

Golden Tiger is made at the Vympel plant. Google "vympel small arms ammuntion" and all things will be made clear. AIM still has the best price going that I know of for 7.62x39 ammo.

I'm finishing my first case of Golden Tiger and have another sitting on the shelf. Got mine from AIM. Seems very comparable to the Wolf I've run through the same gun (WASR).

No problems with the coating or sealers melting. Any feeding or ejecting problem was traceable to the gun or magazine. I recommend it. Where else are you going to get a case of rifle ammo for $160?

One case of Golden Tiger from AIM was $178 delivered to Southern Iowa.

It will depend on where you live. To ship to Arizona it would cost me $188.95 thru AIMS. I ordered 2000 rounds from ammoman a couple of months ago(when it was $179.00/1000) and everything went without a hitch. I havn't used any yet because it has been too hot to shoot until just the last week or so. I'm hoping to get out and try it in the next couple of weeks.

I really wish folks would bother with a brief explaination of their complaints rather than just post a slam with nothing else to go on.

My experience with ammoman has been nothing short of stellar - I've ordered tens of thousands of rounds from him, from the other side of the continent, and have nothing but good experiences (and lots of ammo) to show for it.

golden tiger turns my thumb green. i got a 1k at a gunshow for $183 after tax. my ass still hurts, but its not as bad as $225/k of wolf.

I hate to be at risk of asking a stupid question but what does steel jacketing have to do with fire danger?

Wow KMBRTAC45, shipping ammo costs more if it has to travel a longer distance, amazing! :)

Sorry to put your panties in a twist....there is plenty of documentation of what happens with ammoman when it is not a smooth transaction...which IMHO says a lot more about a merchant than all the times nothing goes wrong

I am not interested in hijacking this thread to beat that dead horse

Have you looked at www.ammunitiontogo.com ?

They have some good deals on 7.62x39 ammo and lots of other ammo too. Really cool site. I have never dealt with them, though. They have the 700 rounds of Hotshot ammo that someone above was talking about:

The best steel cased x39 out there today, well at least in my book, (the Romanian "hot shot" x39 from Sadu) is $139/700

http://ammunitiontogo.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=815

Only it is 129 for 700 at ammunitiontogo.com

That link provided for the 700 round sealed can is for Brown Bear. Which could be either Uly or Barnual. It is not the new stuff from Sadu arsenal in Romania. But yeah it is $10 lesss and probibly does go bang just fine.

woof, seeing that you live in central Ohio, you probably don't have the wildfire concerns that certain places west of you deal with every year. I certainly didn't grow up around it in Arkansas, but shooting in eastern Washington state, where a car fire on the side of a highway turned into a several hundred (maybe thousand) acre fire, has been an eye opener. Our local range (which looks just like the picture below) will not allow any steel core or jacketed ammo because of the risk of sparks and fire.

In that case the only stuff i know of that can be shot in 7.62x39 that is still "mil-spec" and not been SAAMI-fied is the M67 Yugo surplus, the PPU repack of of tumbled yugo M67 surplus, and the stuff from Privi-Partizan that aim has recently run out of, And last but not least, as it is currently availible for $5.95 a box and is boxer primed brass cased an no steel anywhere (non magnetic all the way) is the Igman x39 that wideners has right now.

LeibstandarteAdH:

ahh you are right. I remember seeing the hotshot ammo you talked about in 700 rounds on ammunitiontogo.com, and for some reason saw the brown bear 700 rounds for $130 thinking it was the same thing you were talking about. My mistake.
