I was originaly thinking of getting a nice, new S&W revolver, but i was into my local shop yesterday, and they got several new DPMS ar-15s in stock. They are selling the Classic 20" for $730 The CENTURY ARMS WASR-10s they had were selling for $699!

There was a little bit of play between the uper and lower recievers. Is this normal on AR-15s, or are these just built crapy?

If its all well and good i think i may snatch one of those up instead!

A little play between the upper and lower is normal/OK. DPMS makes a decent rifle and that sounds like a great price given the recent price hikes on every black rifle across the country.

If the wiggle between the upper/lower bothers you, there is a $5 piece that you can add to take care of it.

Good deal, and a good rifle to get familiar with. Very good chance this might be you last opportunity to buy one at that price.

a new AR for that price is a steal right now. double check to make sure its not used. then buy it either way

So i got a new DPMS M-15 for $750. I decided that i liked the flexibility of the flat top upper better, and that seemed to be worth an extra 20 bucks.

here is a pic with my Millet DMS, next to the AK:

No dust cover, or forward assist, but Its my first AR. i will get new uppers for it eventually anyway. Don't know if this is the "sporticle" model or not, but it has a NATO chamber and M4 feed ramps. Im happy with it. :)

I would have withheld my comment if I had known it was a "Sportical". Those MSRP at $699.00. I can't tell if that is the light barrel or not.

I am glad you like you new gun.

Sorry mr.trooper I did not mean any harm. It's just I am not a big fan of that particular rifle. (The Sportical, not yours) It seems to remind me of everything I detest in a gun manufactures marketing policy. Take a good product and try to cheapen it as much as you possibly can, knowing a possible gun buying frenzy by new to the platform owners is about to occur.

My issue, not yours.

i'm not aiming for your cheerios, but those stocks are fugly.

innerpiece has a nice thread about his sportical somewhere around here. most people seem to be happy with them.

no harm done.

I will try to make it to the range tomorrow before work, an post a review.

And i agree that the stock is fugly. it will get replaced with something else eventually.

I am still laughing at your cheerios post.

The sportical will treat you fine. Enjoy your rifle.

ugly? you must mean the front stock, I like the buttstock, I think your gun has a nice butt. har

Just got back from the range. I didn't have a camera, but I will do my best to put up a detailed writeup.

Fit and finish of the rifle: The external finish is even, and looks well applied. There are no machine marks visible on any of the parts in the upper receiver. The bolt assembly looks to be parkerized. The gas key is well staked, and the fit of all the parts in the bolt group are tight. The lower receiver has no visible machine marks, but a few of the parts do. There is a very tiny amount of play between the upper and lower receivers, but it is minimal, and iv been told thats normal.

furniture: the front hand guards are solid and tightly fitted. The pistol grip also feels very solid. The butt stock on the other hand feels a bit chinsey, but it functions as expected.

Lets get on to how it shot:

My only previous experience with an AR-15 was with a S&W free-floated target model. I borrowed it at one of those in-house demos where a S&W sales rep brings in all of their top-tier guns and rents them out for free, you provide the ammo. It blew hot gas in my face, and the free-floated barrel vibrated for a full second after each shot. I found it to be weird and annoying. I also caused some user error malfunctions, because i didn't get the first magazine seated completely. Once the magazine was properly seated, i experienced no malfunctions.

At the time i took the burning gas to the face to be a normal byproduct of direct gas impingement. I was pleasantly surprised today. I sighted in my Millet DMS by shooting 5 shout groups at 25 yards (its too cold to go to the outdoor range).

The first thing i noticed was the trigger pull. It was heavy. There was a little bit of creep but not very much. the pull was definitely heavier than i was expecting, but its not terrible.

Then the shot broke. There was NO stinging cloud of gas! I like that. the shot hit a little low and left, so i adjusted. shot again, and it was still left. adjusted again, and it was right on. At 25 yards i printed a 5 shot group under an inch, from a standing position. I know thats not stellar at such a short range, but that pretty good shooting for me!

So how did it function? well, i didn't put a ton of ammo down range (im poor) but i fired 100 rounds of WWB, American eagle, and PMC ammo, all 55gr FMJ. There were no failures of any kind.

Before i took it in i re-lubed it. I took off all of the light factory oil, and greased up the bolt with chain hoist grease. i use this for all of my guns because its a long lasting high use grease, and it has graphite mixed in. In my experience, Semi-automatics get very hot and oils tend to cook off. I use this grease on my AK-47, Glock, and Ruger MKIII as well, and it works.

Overall, I am very happy with my new gun. The little nuisances like the cheesy stock and trigger can, and probably will be, fixed at a later date when funds allow. :)

come on now. poor people dont have AR's and AK's and cool rugs, whichc I want one of those by the way, shot me where to get one, go pick up a $50 digital cam so you can post some gun porn

When the weather warms up i will take it to the outdoor range and post a longer photo review.
