its will be a first gun so it will be used mainly to practice with. i would like to spend as close to 200 as possible but dont want something that is junky. so far i have only fired a ruger mark II and felt really comfortable with it but i dont know how much they go for. the only must have is a stainless steal option because i dont really like all black guns.

I like my Browning Buckmark. Very accurate. Easy to fieldstrip.

The one drawback to the Ruger 10/22 that I know of is that it is difficult to reassemble. You will want the comments of others here. OTOH, there are many books and videos to help you with this. There are also many aftermarket parts for the Ruger.

tactisol.com Has an aluminum barrel asm available for mkII & 22/45's.I checked them out at the last gun show. You can buy a blued MKII(used)pretty cheaply. This would solve your color issue.:D
And I can just about guarantee that you'll have the only one on the block.

While I don't think I can really recommend it, I have a Phoenix Arms HP22. It's fun to shoot, but definitely nothing serious. They can be had for around 150 or so. They are easy to take apart and put back together, etc. They aren't the most accurate things in the world, but for the most part, mine has performed well enough, with very few malfunctions. Here's a picture of one, if you don't know what they look like. It's an alright gun, but you could probably find something a little better. Sorry I can't be of more help...:) It is a lot of a fun to shoot though.

I got my Ruger 22/45 for $199 + tax on sale at a chain store. It is every bit as accurate as my SS 5.5" bull bbl MKII that I paid twice as much for. The 22/45 even has a better stock trigger than the old MKII. The Browning Buck Mark is a nice gun as well but it will be a little over $200.

There is a cheaper alternative. Try the Bersa Thunder .22 pistols. They are nicer looking and reliable too.

The grip angle on the Ruger is much like the Glock. The Browning is a decent gun too. I own a Browning and would recommend that and a Ruger. Both should be used for under $200. And if you don't like either, resale is pretty good.

Beretta makes a .22, but it's either a love or hate thing.

I like my Beretta Neos, but I'd not recommend it as a first gun since the mag release is in a very non standard spot. Main advantage is the built in Weaver rail for mounting scopes or Red Dot sights, again, not a feature very useful to a first timer.

Since you shot the Ruger and liked it, I'd say look for one you like and can afford. A used one should be fine as they are really pretty hard to break without showing obvious damage or excessive wear.

I think you can ask Firestorm regarding the Bersa .22s. The Argentina website has some of those.

In Search of the Fun .22

I, also would vote for the Ruger. Love mine, but it's way above the $200 limit (all decked out). Another thought is the Walther P-22, have one and is a fun little gun.

Bersa is an Argentine company (you get a little argentine flag keychain with every Bersa, made this argentine girl on campus smile).

Firestorms and Bersas are the same thing except for cosmetic differences in grips and trigger guards, they are just imported by two different companies (though i believe only firestorm imports the .22lr model). Llama/Gabilondo is a spanish firearms company that gives a bad name to spanish gunmakers, they make 1911s that aren't really 1911s (few parts compatibility).

I got a Firestorm .22lr, i love it but it only likes the hot ammo and doesn't feed those long CCI Stingers.(try 60gr. SSS, Velociters. it's not a target pistol, it' s a fun plinking pistol. 200 bucks.

I would also recommend spending a little more money and going for a Walther P22 (the 3.5" goes for around $250 these days). Awesome little plinker. Lots of fun. Eats everything I've shoved in it thusfar (Remington Game Loads, Remington Subsonic, Federal Champion, Federal American Eagle, uh... more I can't remember). Many a gopher has seen the end of his days on the wrong side of mine. Walther offers it with a stainless slide for a dual-tone look. It can also be suppressed pretty easily if you decide to go that route later on in your shooting life (easier on the ears).

The Ruger MKII and 22/45 are also excellent, as well as the Browning Buckmark. Have'nt had the chance to shoot a Bersa/Firestorm.

Also, try checking your local pawn shops. .22 pistols are usually pretty easy to find, and you might find something you like for less that $200. If you run into a Colt Woodsman on the cheap (good luck, but stranger things have happened), grab it.

yeah i like the looks of the P22 but the comments ive read on here and on firing line seem to be about 50/50 as far as reliability goes.

I really like my Ruger 22/45. It's a real quality piece. Lots of aftermarket stuff, too, but it's plenty good for practice as is. Supposed to copy the grip angle and controls of a 1911 type pistol. You can get one with a stainless barrel, too. It'll cost a little more, but it sure looks cool in two tone.

I'd spend the extra money to get the gun you want. Besides, .22 ammo's cheap, right?
