Ok so a friend of mine is offering to sell me 5000 rounds of .22lr for $300 and I was just wondering if that's a decent price right now or not.

$0.06/shot, thats not a steal, but I'd be tempted to pay it as .22 is still very difficult to come by in my area, and when it does, its usually $0.10/shot + tax.

That's the main reason I was thinking about buying it is because I can't ever find it and it didn't seem to be a terrible price. Ty

For the times it isn't a horrible price. Midway had Federal AutoMatch come in last night at about $28/325 or $.086/round (including shipping). With a one box limit, it is already gone, less than 24 hours later.

Also you need to consider how fast you will go through .22 if its bulk ammo and you're only an occasional shooter it will probably be available in stores for cheaper before you shoot it all.

I see no problem storing a case of 22LR even if you are only an occasional shooter. You'll know that you have it if you want to shoot. Doesn't take up much room and so you can buy for $0.05/round later.... that's $50 and usually not a big deal for most folks.

Of course depends on some factors but it is a steal

in my estimation at this time in the .22 game.

More than I'd like to pay, but at this price I would buy, since we are down to our last ~13000 rounds :(

At 0.10/round we'll just plink with my reloaded 9mm.

I'd buy it for $300.

Still can't find any around here except for match ammo at .30/round or more.

I consider 4.5-5 cents per round for 22LR to be a good deal.

6 cents is great, esp. considering the current supply and demand.

My only caveat would be to ensure that it is good quality rimfire ammo and that it will function well in whatever rimfire firearm you have.

I have found Federal and CCI to make the best bulk rimfire ammo. Winchester is okay and I am a bit leery of Remington, but that is just my opinion.

If it was MiniMags, I'd probably pick it up. Anything else, I'd leave behind. I have too many semi-auto .22LR pistols to fool around with lesser stuff.

$300 for 5000 rounds a good deal these days. That is about the same as the CCI minimags I have on backorder at Midway (still hoping they come through).

If it is 5000 rounds of blazer or minimags... good. If it is Remington GB ... not so much.

That $300 for 5000 rounds could be $500 for 3000 rounds in a year or two from now. Or it could be $200 for 5000 rounds. We don't know. However given the ongoing shortage and the question of availability in the future, I think it is a good deal overall.
.

^^^ I agree with Midwest. It's not a screaming deal compared to 3 years ago, but it's not a bad deal in today's market.

For me, it would depend on what it is. But then again, I'm not out of .22 lr ammo. I still have several years worth at the rate I shoot it. (I don't have that much. I just don't shoot very much rimfire ;))

If it was just bulk 500 or 550 packs of loose ammo, I would probably pass. The old "bricks" you used to buy with 50 count boxes packaged together in 500 packs, yes I would snap it up in a heartbeat.

However, if I were hurting for .22 ammo, I would buy it either way. You know your situation, so make a decision based on that.

I'd probably try to talk him down to the low $200's and end up paying whatever price he came back with, even if it was $300.

You really believe that? With worldwide demand for lead at all timer highs for things like car batteries, etc., I would buy it and not think twice - prices aren't going back to what they were for certain things

A buddy of mine happened to be in Walmart the other night when they were putting out ammo. He got two boxes of 550 Federal for $19.99 each.
I luck up on it sometimes early in the morning. You just have to be there at the right time.
$300 for 5,000 rounds isn't a total rip but he must be more of an acquaintance than a good friend.

The retail price of 22 hasn't gone up though, so its not a matter of it going back. The secondary market is whats taken off and it is falling, albeit slower than most of us here would like to see. If walmart continues to keep their prices at the $20ish per brick supply will eventually catch demand.

Personally I can wait for that many here can't/won't but theres no sense in paying panic prices for an amount that far exceeds your shooting needs. Maybe the OP does shoot that much in a years time and that could very well be a deal he should jump on, but if hes a brick a year person then I'd say wait for it to come back down.

I'd buy it if it is CCI. I'd buy it IF it was Federal Lightning or Champions. If it is Remington, I'd ask your friend how long he has had it.

I just bought a case of Sellier & Bellot .22 LR from Palmetto Armory for $469 plus shipping. I'm well satisfied with it, and if it's still available next month, I'll buy another case.

If I needed it and thought I'd shoot it up in the next year I'd buy it...its a good deal for the current market if you don't have it.
If you are just buying it to sit on it, I wouldn't...I think we will see much better prices on .22lr than current, and maybe the best prices in quiet a while here when supply catches up and then surpasses demand.
Lots of people buying up every .22lr round they come across, what will happen when people are FINALLY stocked up but manufacturers are still pumping it out?
Nobody will be buying .22lr in bulk and prices will plummet
And people will start shooting their rimfires again...then eventually supply and demand will stabilize again.
Barring another outbreak of panic, and even then...a lifetime supply X2?
