My daughter and her husband just moved to Coorado Springs. Are there any good ranges and gun stores in that area? By that I mean stores that have knowlegdable staff that does not pressure you into products they have in the inventory and ranges that have good training programs.

Specialty sports (in the springs) has the most amazing selection I've ever seen in any shop.
I don't recall the address, but you should be able to find them in the phone book.

Whistling Pines Gun Club

Nice clean Indoor range, member discounts, nice staff. Lots of classes available.
Some might consider expensive if you don't use the range much.
I shoot three times a week or more.
Are you military?

I believe Dragon Man is close to Colorado Springs. There was a gun shop off of Nevada Road I believe. They were the shop that sold the sks or ak that was used by the man who shot at the white house when Clinton was in. They were pretty proud of it. They had the newspaper article in their shop for all to see. I was only out there for a year and much too poor at the time to worry much about shooting so I never really got to any gun shops.

Specialty Sports is a fantastic shop.

I'll also second Whistling Pines. I already belong to two shooting clubs, so I can't really justify the cost of joining there, but it is an excellent facility, especially if you want to shoot in the winter.

The Shootin' Den on Fillmore has about the best selection of used guns. Sportsmen's Warehouse has the best selection of reloading gear and components. The Dragon Man's outdoor range is east on Highway 94. Turn left at the top of the long hill with the stop light at the top. It's possible to shoot bullseye, (.22 long rifle only, sad to say,) at the Olympic Training Center. Specialty Sports on the southeast corner of Murray and Fountain, has the best selection of firearms.

The El Paso County sheriff's have issued more CCW permits than any other county in the state: over 7,000 to date, I'm told.

Thank you folks. I really appreciate the info.
My duaghter is serving in the Army at Ft. Carson.
I work for the Army in Virginia.

Tell her not to miss the dragon man that is quite an experience just getting to the shop.

Since she is .mil she can use the POW range right on post for free. It is right before you get out the back gate. But first she has to visit range control and get a range pass.

You used to be able to rent shotguns at MWR, don't know if that is still an option there or not. But they were less than $10 a day.

Something else great about FT Carson is the elk hunting. It is fanatstic and there are big herds of mature elk out there if... you can get one of the limited hunting passes for on post.

Sportsmans Warehouse, good selection of guns, reloading equipment, hunting gear.

Specialty Sports, awesome selection of guns and accessories, but not the best prices. Sportsmans Warehouse usually beats their price. Case in point : I bought a Walther P-22 a Sportsmans for $239, it was $289 at Specialty.

I'll also add a vote for Specialty Sports. They have a huge selection.

I'm a member of Whistling Pines, so I'm biased, but I think it's a great place to shoot. If you're only looking for lessons, I believe you can take lessons there without being a member.

I'll second both Pueblo West Sportsman's Association (PWSA) and shooting on Carson...there is currently a waiting list for PWSA membership but the annual fee comes due at the end of March and there is some turnover....if interested I can PM contact info to get on the list. To shoot on Carson she will need to get an RSO qualification...this only involves doing a 2 hr class and test. She can sign up at range safety.

For Carson, there is only one range available for private shooting....can't remember the distance. PWSA has 6 covered rifle ranges (I think 8 positions each), 6 pistol berms, shotgun range, bow, etc. Very nice private facility.

I'll pretty much agree with what's been posted:
Dragon Man's for outdoor shooting up to 200 yards. No frills, just a place to shoot for $10/day. His private military museum is well worth the $5 tour.

Whistling Pines (requires membership) for indoor shooting up to 25 yards - any and all calibers, including rifles. Well, maybe not 50-cal...

Specialty Sports for unbelievable selection of new firearms (all types), scopes, knives, etc. Has a few used items, not a lot. No pressure, very friendly folks. Prices are a little higher, but I try to support them.

Shootin' Den for good selection of used rifles. Nice folks.

Sportman's Warehouse generally has good selection and prices; I buy more ammo there than anything else.

There are a few others around also, but those above are the ones I frequent.

The El Paso County sheriff's have issued more CCW permits than any other county in the state: over 7,000 to date, I'm told.

I applied right after Christmas 2006, and about 4 weeks later received a permit with the year (2006) and a number in the neighborhood of 1200. I wonder if that means 1200 permits issued in 2006 alone?

Sportsmans Warehouse, good selection of guns, reloading equipment, hunting gear.

Specialty Sports, awesome selection of guns and accessories, but not the best prices. Sportsmans Warehouse usually beats their price. Case in point : I bought a Walther P-22 a Sportsmans for $239, it was $289 at Specialty.

+1

+ I shop here for hard to find items: Specialty Sports has the largest selection in Colorado iirc....but their prices are higher than retail in many cases. If you can't find it elsewhere, Specialty Sports or online are the only options. eg. Ammo that has a retail price of $22.95 per box online was $28.95 at Specialty Sports.

+++ I shop here first: Sportsman's Warehouse has good prices...sometimes even better than you can find online. Their selection is fairly good but not even 1/4 that of Specialty Sports. Sportsman's Warehouse also offers Military personnel a 5% discount including firearms!

There are multiple private ranges around Colorado Springs. Best thing is to ask people in the gun stores and you will have members fill you in. I am looking at joining a private range in the Falcon area that has a 300 yard. Most others only go out to 200 yards.

There is also a great skeet/trap range on Peterson AFB that will cost you $35 to join. It is due to close this spring and a new skeet range to open on Ft. Carson - memberships will transfer.

For silohouette shooting you have to go down to a private range in Pueblo from what I understand.

Shootin' Den for good selection of used rifles. Nice folks.

Glad your experience was better than mine. "The Den of Evil" had the worst service of any shop I have ever been in. They could never be bothered to help me, let alone acknowledge that I was even in the store.
