Tonight is my last night as a civilian. Tomorrow I will wake up, pack my bag and head to MEPS in Minneapolis. From there I will be shipped out to Lackland Air Force Base for basic training. I worry a bit about what I got myself into but I'm confident this will be a good thing for me in the end. It will help me get my life back on track toward the goals I want to accomplish. Unfortunately though, I will be without a computer for the next few months so I'll see you later!

Oh and keeping this gun related, I get to qualify with an M-16! :D I wonder if I'll get to use "da switch"!

Thank you...

for taking on the job of protecting our freedoms.

Remember, basic is simply a game. They don't really care how you fold your t-shirts, just if you are willing/able to follow directions without deviation. It doesn't really matter for t-shirts but if you're putting a jet engine back together it really, really does.

Thanks again.

Dude, you got yourself into the Air Force. You're going to accumulate Frequent Flyer miles by the bucketload. I hear that AF Basic training primarily consists of how to make the perfect martini and how to tell the most convincing war stories to barflies.

Seriously though, congratulations. You've stepped up and made an honorable decision at a difficult time in our Nation's history when many others aren't willing to do as much. You are to be commended for doing so. Good luck and GodSpeed in your time of service.

Frank

Thank you and good luck!
As Migoi said, remember basic's a game to teach you to follow instructions. It will be over before you know it.
Thanks again. :)

Peace, my brother. My all the positive thoughts of us all be with you. You have answered a call to the support and protection of this nation and it will be remembered and not forgotten.

Thank you for this thebucket.

- Learn a lot
- Try to enjoy San Antonio when you get the chance
- Stay safe

Welcome aboard bucket!!

Enjoy your time in basic. The job of the TI's are to break you down and then build you up. Its all a mind game but one that can be made easier by doing what your told, never volunteering and paying attention to detail. You will have fun during war week and getting up bright and early for PT.

When you know where your follow on is, let us know. If its here at DM then I'll do what I can to make your move as painless as possible.

Take care and once again, welcome to the blue!!

Thanks and good luck. If you get the chance before shipping out - run to an IMAX theater tonight and watch Fighter Pilot.

Its Awsome!

Good going. What job (psychological block on military terminology) are you going for? Try languages--9 months in Monterey, CA ain't bad.

Let us know if the AF still shuts down the water obstacles when the temp is under 60 degrees. I'm non athletic but thought the obstacle course was a great playground.

If you go casuals go easy on the new recruits.

My son is leaving for the army in six weeks. Graduated from college this Summer with some Arabic and a desire to be a Green Barrett. Man am I proud! Man am I worried! I am sure glad that there are men like you who are willing to go into harm's way to protect our country. THANK YOU!

Lou

I congratulate you for volunteering for the service, even if it's just the Air Force! :p JK, that's cool.

I wonder if I'll get to use "da switch"!

No. If you are a good recruit, they will show you a picture of an M16A2 and say, "This is what the Army guys get to use." IIRC, my BIL (he did his Basic at Lackland) got to fire an M16 with an Atchisson convertor in it, no full auto. If you think you have what it takes, try to go Aircop or CCT, those guys get the good training, and are highly respected by the Rangers and SF.

Good luck at LackLand! :)

Good luck there Bubba,

Stay safe and keep cool. Just don't pull an Ozzy and relieve yourself on the Alamo and San Antonio should be fun.

And get used to people calling you Bubba, it is Tejas after all (not making fun, I used to live there).

Good luck at Lackland. Nice and warm there in summer. Imagine it's changed a bit since I was there in the Summer of 1960.

You will have fun during war week and getting up bright and early for PT.

Man I was told, maybe mis-informed, that the AF does not have PT every Morning like the Army, Navy, Marines. I had a friend who was going to go in, but then changed his mind. He said that he was told "No PT", I guess that's once you get out of Basic. I don't know, Don't hold me to it. I'm just a civilian!! :)

But good luck, and thanks for stepping up!! And remember it takes braines to be in the AF, there not dirt crawlers like those in the Marines or Army!! :neener: My Grandfather's retired Navy. He told me that one!!

Lackland

You made a good choice in the Air Force. I hope you have someone reading your post here & sending you the replys or telling them by phone when you get to talk to home. When you get to Lackland your Drill Instructor will be my son. :D You will get to use da switch. :  Be safe. He does not put up w/ ANY carelessness. He has had a few close calls but no one injured. He is tough & you will thank him for it some day.
