I have a 28" Franchi I-12 and Ive been told several times that its a "goose gun".

What attributes determines what is for goose, or for smaller birds, or for larger game like deer? It seems to me that I can use it for goose, lighten the load for smaller birds, and use rifled slugs for deer. It seems like it would work just fine for any use. I suppose the weight and barrel length are a factor of convenience?

Any thoughts?

I don't know what constitutes a "goose gun" specifically but we have always called any shotgun with a 36" barrel a goose gun ,particularly one made by Marlin.

IMO. a goose gun is one we shoot at geese with., Good ones tend to be long of barrel and chambered for shells 3" long or more.

I have 870'd geese with a 21" turkey style barrel but believe a longer barrel's better. Starting long ago, I used a 30" barreled 870 and regard it, with good loads, as nigh perfect.

Use your Franchi for whatever you want. It'll do the job if you do yours....

There is a Marlin 5510 for sale on Gunbroker right now with five days left and 10 bids on it. Just go to the Gunbroker home page and type Marlin 5510 in the search bar.

Heck, I want a single shot 10 ga! I'm pretty big though and I'd maybe have it ported.

I've shot a few diferent 10's both ported and not ported. Porting does seem to reduce muzzle jump some, and make a lot more noise. But it doesn't seem to have much effect on "STOMP". Really a 10 isn't all that bad on recoil because they usually weigh more than a comparable 12ga. But in a single shot HR/NEF type of action, ...Well .... I hope your into "Pain" :D

I had a 10ga for about two weeks, then I sold it at a loss to a fellow THR member with all of five or ten shells missing from those I bought.

TOO MUCH RECOIL!

I have a browning bps stalker in 10ga with a 28'' bbl. to me that is a goose gun. :D:D recoil ain't that bad my mossberg mavrick 88 w/rem. shur shot heavy dove kicks twice as hard as it does.

It's probably chambered in 3", with a fairly long barrel and a vent rib. You can shoot smaller game with it too, yes. Just make sure you put in the I.C. choke if you're going to shoot slugs.

ok guys... so back on topic!

Why chambered in 3"? Bigger game? More reach?

Because its 28" + its a good goose gun for accuracy and swing?

Does a vent rib qualify for a good goose gun to cool it down from a lot of shooting?

What makes a gun good for hunting goose and WHY?

Thanks folks!

3" chambering works better way out dere with non toxic shot. While the lead shells of my long lost youth were fairly effective, the non toxics need more room for enough pellets. OTOH, the premium loads are on paper slightly better than lead.

Hevi Shot works very, very well.

Long barrels work better for long shots not because of ballistic superiority but because of extra weight forward helps keeping the swing moving.

Few goose guns get shot enough to need a rib. The rib's primary purpose is to reduce heat mirage.
