Saw one relatively clean and what looked to be low use one on ebay from an estate sale, Was listed for 181 but they accepted my offer for 145.I saw a few rcbs 5-10's for less as well. Was it waste to get over the 5-10? But I made my choice. I should have it next Friday and won't know for certain if it actually works correctly. I read the thread on tune ups here and plan to do that when I get it. Any tips or tricks I should know about that scale?

In the Ohaus, Lyman Ohaus or RCBS Ohaus scale world, what is the heirarchy of best to worst?

I've seen the 10-0-5, the 5-0-5 and maybe even a 10-0-10. But even more than that. Some selling for $50....others for over $200.

What makes them different?

304 is a hanging dial -o- grain some say TOL
Ohaus or RCBS 10-10
Ohaus 10-0-5.
Lyman M-5 ( same as 10-05 )
From there we go to the small chassis 500 and 5 grain capacity scales
Lyman D-5
Ohaus 505 and so on..

The Ohaus 10-0-5 (Lyman M5) are as good as it gets - reloading scales slowly went down hill from there on.

Looks like it's missing the 500 grain counter weight.
In all reality you may never need it.... When they start to exceed $100 or so I prefer as prestine condition as possible, not that they weigh any better just my idea of value.

It has it. It's off to the side of the holder. The one I got is missing and yeah will probably never need it though scale looks to be unused as the blades were clean., didnt' notice until after the fact and seller isn't replying to my question...ebay life..

Good find and fair price given today's market. I have one that came in the factory dilapidated box and it's quite accurate. Make sure to get a check weight set to ensure zero and balance.

I have the RCBS 5-10 ..... It is the one with the horizontal rotary grains and tenths at the right hand end of the beam .... bought new in 1969 ...
Another of the good scales - only ever made in USA, has exactly the same "approach to weight" device and beam as the 10/10 scales.

I have 2 Lyman M-5s recalibrated 1 & they `re both spot on with check weights. The smaller scales work for most tasks, but the smoothness of the M-5s is unparalleled.

Now I have an old set of WEBSTER W2 scales that sit on real knives , these weigh dust that settles in em !!!!!
Down side is they only go to 350gr.

A sheet of note book paper cut on the lines squared weighs 1/10 gr. & after confirming with check weights I add 3/4 squares 1 at the time to see if the knives or pivots are free , the WEBSTERS move the fastest by adding just 1/10 gr to it.

I also have a beautiful old Webster, although it's oil damped, it's a very well engineered scale.
Far from being a down side, I think the fact it only weighs to 350gn to be a significant plus. When weighing powder, I would think 99% of the time 0-60 grains would be sufficient so why have a scale, when you are trying to measure something with a reasonable degree of accuracy, you are only ever using the first 10% of the range?

This is like trying to keep your car at a steady 12.5 mph when your speedo reads 0-130mph. It would be far easier if the speedo read 0-20mph.

Received my scale today. Seller did a terrible job packaging it. It now has a dent on the front. Which i tried to push back back it's not moving so it must have gotten some weight put on it. Even had the cobwebs still on it It zero's. Going to try some test weights. Deciding on weather to return it... 20210311_154406.jpg 20210311_154357_HDR.jpg

Check it for operational deficiency. It may end up being your best scale ..... We have an old beat up M-5 that produces excellent ammunition
