SSP-MM, net score = 160.92 (Points down applied was 32) [shooting G22]

No holster throwing, no cheap velcro flap mag' carrier either :D.

Switched to an UM Kydex Open Top Belt-Slide. Found a deal on a Galco Open Top Mag' Carrier ($20).

Had a lousy dress rehearsal (shot 229) was way too passive...decided to "shoot it like I meant it"...harnessed aggression I guess...seemed to work.

30% improvement on Stage 3 (had been one of the COF at last months club match).

SS is in sight...have two more classifier opportunities in the next 3 weeks...but...expect I may try to do an ESP (w/G22 or G35) and CDP (with my 1911) ...we'll see...need to work the HS with the 1911...didn't miss any with the G22 this weekend. In the end, I expect to shoot one of three Glocks in SSP, and 1 of 3 DA/SA for ESP (two CZ-75's and an Arcus), then my 1911 in CDP...next year, maybe I pick up a revolver and try for 4-gun :D.

Took a 15 minute free Classifier Clinic from the local IDPA guru (he certifies RO's). Some simple subtle suggestions helped. For example:

Stage 1, strings 1-3...face the targets squared up (use normal stance...I'm a "sort of Weaver" default stance kind of guy).

Stage 2 movement strings...feel free to advance rapidly to engage targets at closer distance (still watching out for the forward fault line). Retreat more slowly so you don't have to shoot as far...and rearward motion is a little unnatural...safer to move somewhat slower to stay in control.

Reload descriptions...finally learned the difference between what IDPA calls a "Speed Reload" and a "Slide-Lock Reload". Speed Reload = dropping mag' with one or more rounds left in it on the ground and moving on (big no-no in IDPA)...but at Slide-Lock...you can ditch the empty and come back for it later...we had a ~40 post threads on re-loads and I never "got it" until the Clinic...maybe because I'm "40+" :D. That will be useful to know for the monthly club matches.

Great fun, did have a mental lapse on Stage 3, string 2 (after waiting several hours to shoot)...sort of forgot about the reload and advance to barrel...TACR happened fairly quickly but wasn't smooth...still shot it in under 21 seconds.

Safe shooting,

Sweet. I havent shot an IDPA match in like 4 years. All I shoot now is USPSA. I keep meaning to go back and shoot IDPA but just havent done it yet. I keep forgeting to get bullets for my 45.

Yes, for a short period of time.

I was there, and started on the Second stage, but had gun problems. My trigger didn't reset four times in the first three strings, causing me to eject the chambered round and seat another one. So I retired with equipment problems.

It was along ride up and back, but at least I met acouple of nice people. It's seems like a good club, so I'll be back.

When is the next classifier?

sorry your piece let you down...

...a guy from Maine (100 minute drive), had his front sight fall off (a Hi-Viz he'd self-installed on a G17). Fortunately he had a G19 with him to finish up with.

I expect to bring a back-up piece within the same division I enter from now on.

Yeah, Pioneer is a terrific club. I joined in March...in part because of the IDPA offering...I also enjoy the 100-yd rifle range.

I don't know when Pioneer will do the classifier again...probably not until the fall I'm guessing.

I know Scarborough Maine is doing a Classifier this weekend (Sunday), and Nashua Fish & Game is doing one on the 7th of June.

Pioneer has a club match on the 19th of June...hope you can join us :).

CZ52Guy,

I shot the first two strings of Stage 2 (advancing and retreating) with a total of 3 fail to fires.

I started the third string (back to target turn shoot 2-2-2 reload from slidelock, shoot 2-2-2 ect.), but on the fifth shot I had a failure to fire, which forced me to reload early (remember only 6 rounds to start with) and that put me out of the proper sequence.

Had I finished the String, I would have been given at least one procedural, perhaps several. That said, I would have already been penalized about 11 seconds (1 procedural and 4 Tap Rack Bangs) so continuing was moot, even if I had a backup gun.

I will be ordering a Service Pak from Wolff for the gun and I'll see what will happen.

Thanks for the Info on the classifiers and the 19 Jun match.

back-up gun...

Hi,

My understanding of the Classifier is to ascertain the skill of the shooter.

I would have expected that at least at Pioneer, you would have had the opportunity for a re-shoot had you asked for one (assuming you had a working back-up within the same division you registered for).

That was the case with the gentleman with the loose "hi-viz".

I was over there tonight praciticing with my 1911. They left some of the stuff up so I was able to use the "Stage 3" bay to run through the full classifier...different...fun, I learned a lot, but very different from my Glock...I expect I would have squeaked into MM (even with the tougher grading standards for CDP)...need to re-check my rough math...it's also sort of a pain to run yourself through, run the timer, make sure you record it properly, etc...hat's off to the RO's...they make it easier for the shooter's to concentrate on...well, shooting :D.

Again, hope to see you on the 19th :).

You're correct, but I think....

CZ52Guy,

My goal was to shoot the Classifier with my full size CDP gun, and hopefully move up a class. Between it and my two CDP eligible backup guns, it is by far the quickest and most accurate.

But you are correct, if I had a backup with me, and I was given a reshoot, then I could have continued. It would have been a good practice session.
The RO and I didn't really talk about a reshoot because my gun was down.

I think it makes good sense to have a backup gun for a regular shoot, but unless you have an equal quality backup gun, the classifier just becomes a practice. Or so I think.

re: CDP

I'm very much constrained for back-up in CDP. I have a 1911...and a hope to get another later this year...so, if I have an equipment malfunction during a CDP attempt, I'm out of luck.

I'm fortunate that for two classes, I have have some redundancy I could call on (e.g. SSP I can bring a G22/G35/G23)...I'd be willing to interchange those as part of a "continue on" for classification at this point...but I'm only a MM right now.

For ESP, I have two CZ-75's that are very similar that could back each-other up.

I'm hoping for a year end bonus to get 1911 #2...was thinking of something with Trijicons...but I really love the Mil-Spec...terrific workhorse...not sure I want something "too pretty" after all :).

Reminds me...if I decide to take the plunge into SSR at some point, I'll probably want two :D.

Yeah, a spair gun is a good thing, or a lot of spair parts for the one you have. My Norinco 1911 is my workhorse with a Springer Champion as backup for CDP. Same parts, same ammo, and same mags round out problems nicely.

I'm thinking another Springer...maybe a GI as a CDP backup? Maybe the Mil-Spec Stainless for variety sake? I really do prefer 3-dot sights...nothing doing on that front until year end at best. At some point I might like to get a G21 too...I enjoy shooting my Glocks...it would be way different than the 1911, but still familiar based on my collection...so many guns, need more funds :D.

Safe shooting,

re: Score Posting

I think they'll post the regionals match they do in August, but club matches are generally e-mailed to those who are interested.

I was able to chase down the 4/17 results, but haven't heard anything about 5/15 yet.

If you're interested in the 5/15 results, I'll find a way to get them to you once I get them.

Safe shooting,

I just shot my first classifier last night at the Oakdale Gun Clun in MN. I did ok with mostly all A zone hits. I wonder how long it will take before my scores are available online.

Depends on the club.

Was this IDPA? Did you keep your score sheets? It's not difficult to figure out your classification.

IDPA targets don't have an "A" zone.
Sturmruger was probably shooting at an IPSC/USPSA club. Or using sloppy terminology.

IPSC scores are sent in and classified at USPSA HQ. There are numerous IPSC classifiers and you are classed based on your performance vs the best on record for that particular CoF. It takes a number of scores on record before they will issue a classification.

Thank you for offering...

CZ52Guy,

Thank you for offering, that was nice, but you won't need to that. I only asked if they were posted because I like to "visit" the clubs I shoot at to see how people are doing.

Thanks Again,
