I picked up a Remington Police Magnum 24421 NIB from the LGS. I will probably get one more because I buy guns in pairs these days. It cost $639 before tax.

What ammo should I feed it? I tend to think I should have plenty of buckshot 00 on hand, but I also think I should have something else on hand that is safer to use in an apt should I ever have to use it. I'm moving into my apartment in the beginning of June.

Congrats on a fine shotgun.

The agency I currently work for, and the one previous to that, both issued the Remington 870. I have an Escort Shotgun at home because it is very similar to the 870 and I got it for a song. I also have an 870 that is out to the Gunsmith being worked on.

The work I'm doing is to set the 870 up as what I consider the "Ultimate Tactical Shotgun". That means Ghost Ring Rear Sight, Extended Magazine Tube, Tritium Front Sight Post and a tac Light with a pressure switch, compensator and a sling. Make no mistake, this shotguns primary usage will be Home Defense.

The Escort holds #4 Buckshot, as that's what I loaded it with when I lived in an apartment and it patterns well with that load. I now live in a brick house and load the 870 with 00 Buckshot. I'm partial to the #4's but I like the way the 00 Buck patterns in my 870. I've used the 870 for the past month as my Home Defense Shotgun while I thought long and hard about what changes I wanted to make to it.

I provided the backstory to give you some understanding as to where I'm coming from. I suggest you buy a box of 5 of the various loads you would consider and then go out and pattern the shotgun. That will tell you what load your shotgun works best with. :) Some shotties like 00, some #4's and some even like 000. Let the gun tell you what it likes.

Nice shotgun. I dont own one such as yours, but for my shotguns (Benelli and Mossberg), I prefer using Federal LE Tactical Low-Recoil 00 Buck; tight patterns and good reliability (but, unfortunately, hard to find these days).

I personally live in a house that is widely separated from others so I use slugs. From my reading of loads and recommendations of others much smarter then myself #4 buck would be the best load for an apartment. It is the best all around for penetration vs over-penetration.

I like it. I actually went ahead and ordered a second today (I buy guns in pairs, but didn't buy 2 simultaneously this time b/c I wanted to make sure I'd like it first).

Picked up the second one. No real point to this post other than to brag. :neener: :D

It shouldn't be much of a surprise to members here since I've mentioned multiple times that I own pairs of pretty much all my guns with the exception of a Savage Arms .22lr bolt action.

Oh ok. Well, just in case anybody missed it should I post it again in this thread?

You can never be too clear on things. ;)

Why would you buy guns in pairs?? I would get a nice handgun too. You cant use 2 shotguns at once, but you can use a shotgun and a handgun together.

.cheese.,

Does the 7-shot mag extend past the end of the 18" barrel? My 870P (24447) has a 6 shot mag tube that's flush with the end of the muzzle. Just wondering...congrats on your new purchase.

I have nice handguns too. A whole bunch actually. :)

I buy guns in pairs for 2 reasons:

1) One to take to the range regularly and the other to be a safe queen.
2) So that if I one day have 2 kids, they can both inherit identical collections.

I know I know.... it sounds dumb. What can I do? I'm a little obsessive about the pair thing.

It's pretty close to being flush. I don't have them in front of me, and they're actually boxed up ready for my to move across the country with, but if I remember correctly, the mag is about a centimeter shorter than the barrel.

Ah, I think it's a 6-shot mag tube plus one in the chamber? At least, that's how mine is configured and the barrel/mag are flush.

I would totally do this if it wasn't cost prohibitive for me. It would be nice to have replacement parts readily available in case of a failure on your regular duty hardware. The inheritance thing is a nice idea, too.

Good luck on your move...safe travels.

I'm a big fan of your habits .cheese., I was just pulling your leg. ;)

I've convinced myself that I'll someday have the perfect gun collection, pared down to 25-30 guns. Once I figure that out I'll start buying another copy of each. It could take a while...

Sounds like a sweet idea now that I think about it, but right now since I'm in college still Im buying a veriety with my little money trying to cover my bases :D
