Im still good on Goex. I didn't get a deer in rifle season. I may go out for flint lock. I lucked out yesterday. A doe committed suicide jumping the high stone wall up the street. She took it to the head. I think she was running from a drive. I called the game commission and explained. I offered to use my doe tag. They said to keep it. And they issued me a road kill tag.

Excellent. Doe’s meat is tender and delicious when well prepared.

Are we talking about Goex closing the business or just that the op got the last pound of it recently?

I've got close to five pounds of Swiss and three of Pyrodex. That will last me awhile. I never used Goex anyway.

From google:

"After nearly 220 years, the last black powder manufacturer in America is closing its doors. For the tens of thousands of muzzleloader hunters, cowboy action shooters, and black powder cartridge enthusiasts, the closure of GOEX inevitably means less supply and increased cost in the years ahead."

My lovely wife found 5 cans at the Phoenix gun show last year and picked them up for me. The cost was dirt cheap so I am set for some time to come. I go to all the gun shows around Phoenix which seems to be the best option for now.

When I found out about Goex, I started searching. I found a web post saying so-and-so had some goex so I went to their site. Sure enough, Goex 3f was listed available so I threw caution to the wind and ordered 6 pounds, which is a lot, for me anyway. Next day, I get an e-mail saying my order was cancelled and my card was credited. OK. I then see that Travelers Antiques has a deal on 10 pounds of Schuetzen. Called him. Yup, good to go, loaded up on 2f and 3f. Couple days later a package comes UPS signature required. Great! Open it up and there are 6 bottles of Goex in there! HUH? Yup, first place filled my order, no e-mail! Couple days later, Second order shows up! I now have 8-10 years supply of powder on hand. Stored in a safe place away from the house, capped tight and wrapped in plastic. Locked in a metal foot locker. Spendy, but it's there. With what I have on hand, I now have about 20 pound of powder in both 2f and 3f. Funny how things work out.

Sealed tightly in their plastic containers, popular for at least the last 15 years, BP will safely last long enough to maybe be a problem for our grandchildren (mine have yet to be conceived). I wouldn't bother with a powder bunker unless you had more than the one case allowed for private possession.

Yesterday I came across some .40-60 Maynard loads I had forgotten about. Before the end of this year I will take my Shiloh Sharps to the range and properly dispose of that loaded powder.

I make my own thats comparable to Swiss...brought over 100 pounds of raw material to make while im here im SE Alaska. Make my own primer mix and caps too....got enough to make millions if need be. Glad im not dependant on manufacturers anymore.

Hey OutlawKid, so glad you and your daughter are doing well up there. I was in the Navy back ease and in the deep south where everything was just the way you described in your post when you were in TX. Here in AZ things are calmed down and somewhat close to "normal". Anyways where did you order your raw materials from and what gizmo do you use to make your own caps? I have a '58 Remington and just about out of caps so I need to get into making some. Powder inventory is G2G for now as I have around 15-20 pounds of it. God Bless you and yours. Don

Out of curiosity, does anyone really knows why they’re closing their doors? Is it because of the laws and cost that’s associated with blackpowder? I might need to looking to making my own the future.

Don I got my supplies from Duda Diesel a few years back...but you can get it on amazon I believe. Best to do a search for the purest potassium nitrate (99.XX% is what you want) at the cheapest price. As far as caps go I got my cap maker from ".22 reloader" website. A quick google search will show its website. They make the prime all mix....which is the old H-42 primer formula...only they charge a rediculous price for such a small amount. I just ordered the raw materials from firework websites. It really simple...but use caution and small batches only when making. I did a small write up on this forum on how I made caps using roll caps. You can do a search for "how I make hot percussion caps" and it will bring it up. Id send links but my internet is very slow to load searches as im using a very slow 2g network and barely get any signal bars as it is here in rural alaska lol

Said to be Hodgdon risk and liability averse after the most recent blowup.
That is how Goex got started. The last blowup at DuPont, they were ready to patch up, fill the outstanding Government contact and shut down.
Gearhart and Owens bought the plant and kept it in operation, later relocating to Louisiana. Then Hodgdon bought up Goex.

Wish my wife would pick me up powder at the gun show. Or go to a gun show. You married good. I wanted to start shooting black powder. I guess it will take a few more steps to get started.

Yes.

Repair of a black powder plant after a fire or explosion is expensive. Krupp no longer manufactures parts for those mills. The gears and mill bed must be custom fabricated at great expense.

The last fire and explosion took place in June. 2021. As evidenced by the seven fires/and/or explosions since 1998, there were problems at that plant; the 1911 explosion was caused by a worker tossing floor sweepings into the black powder batch.
