Grail SAA

This is one of my grail guns. A bonafide 2nd Gen, 5 1/2 inch in 45LC. I know the original owner who bought it in '75. The serial number appears to be a 1974 production. All of the throats mesure .452 and its in nice shape. The original owner says he has less than 100 rounds thru it. Uberti still has my El Patron and Goon still has my 1860 and 1861. Guess I'll have to get by with this ( sigh). Anyone know who makes a nice lined, high ride holster for this one?

Nice rig Bob. No Lining? Hmmmm. Why? I'm under the impression lining will somewhat protect the finish on a blued gun better than an unlined one. I do realize that holstering and drawing will eventually take a toll on a finish, but won't a lined holster take a lot longer to damage the finish?

I think one of the very nicest SAA field holsters is the Austin model by El Paso Saddlery. Their Slim Jim model is more reasonably priced and very nice. Regarding lining. I prefer smooth leather for a lining. I would rather have no lining than a suede lining. You're unlikely to get appreciable finish wear with a well fitted holster lined or unlined. On the other hand, a lot of fast draw practice trying to beat the guy in the mirror will eventually thin down the bluing. Red Cent, Craig, and several other of the forum members do very nice work at fair prices. They can give you about anything you can describe.

When I first bought my S&W New Model #3 I ordered an El Paso Slim Jim holster for it. I was very pleased with the holster, fine workmanship. I ordered it lined because I prefer a soft lining to prevent wear to old finishes. I do shoot my antiques enough in CAS that a poorly fitting holster will wear the finish.








A few years later when I bought a Russian Model I ordered another Slim Jim for it.







When I bought a Schofield a few years later I did not have to order another holster for it because it also fit into the two Slim Jims.







For my Colts I prefer a high riding 'Duke' rig. This Duke rig was made up for me about ten years ago when I started shooting CAS. The maker is no longer in business, at least not in these parts. You can see it has had a lot of use.
