My granddaughter got an award for her Air Force (shooting?) performance yesterday. We watched the ceremony where she and several others received performance awards. Looking at the screen shot this morning, I had a flashback of the photo of when she used my 6mm Tikka for deer hunting and when she and my son met at our favorite stand on an old road when she was pre-service at about 16 yrs. She was somewhat uninitiated to gun handling back then and when they met and were talking, she wanted something to lean on, so jammed the muzzle of my favorite 6mm hunting rifle into the muddy road and rested her arms on the butt. Fortunately, my son recognized the gaff and took the rifle and cleaned out the bore with "green" sticks and blowing air down the through the open action. She didn't happen to fire the rifle at a deer that day, but did on a subsequent day, (when I capped the muzzle with a piece of electrical tape). I don't remember whether she shot a deer that weekend, but she ended up getting one here that season.

That's what can happen on a hunting session when I don't accompany the person who's educated at shooting, (but not enough gun handling/maintenance) and borrowed one of my rifles.

Please tell Her Congratulations and Thank Her for Her Service.

Well done!

Our HS AFJROTC marksmanship coach left at the end of January. His son quickly transferred to another school to follow the football coach, this left marksmanship high and dry. (Son was the kicker on the football team as well as a shooter on the JROTC team.)

it has taken me almost two months to get cleared to become a volunteer coach… and since it’s so late I don’t think we will even get to shoot one match. :(

I hope to get the program going for next year.

Stay safe.

They grow up so fast, I always heard that. Now I know it is true and their service is honorable.
I know you must be so proud of her.

Congrats! My daughter also competes in air rifle and smallbore. She has consistently placed in the top three in our state championships and once placed third nationally in smallbore, took fourth that year nationally in air rifle! It is hard work and requires lots of dedication, that is a big accomplishment for sure!
Wow, definitely. Congratulations!

Thanks for the story. It reminded me of when one of my wife's younger brothers blew up a 12 guage shotgun barrel. He was quail hunting and stuck the gun barrel in the snow and didn't bother to clean the snow out. Next bird, BOOM, and a new barrel was required. At least he was unhurt. For some reason he and one other younger one have tended to dumb things with firearms but al least only the guns were damaged.

Thanks for sharing and congratulations to the granddaughter. I have always admired the young woman who give a shot at the military. The granddaughter is my little shooter and when she visits wants a range trip and to ride on my bike. Hard to believe she is now a college sophomore. Youngest grandson now age 8 keeps asking his mom when grandpa Ron will give him a "real rifle" since he has his BB gun.

The very best gifts our own children ever gave us was the grandchildren. :) Enjoy them. :)

Ron
