I had a great day at the range today.

My friend, Hos, was back in Arkansas.

He's the guy from Mongolia who became a US Marine after 9-11, and then earned his US citizneship. He's back in Arkansas for a couple of weeks before he gets sent overseas again. He did one tour in Iraq, and now is actually being sent to Mongolia to help with some joint training for his last few months in the Corps. Basically, he's being paid to go home for a while.

We spent the afternoon at the 300 yard line, with a Swede Mauser, a Finnish M39, a Garand, and my Remington 700 .308 precision rifle.

Hos qualified expert in the Corps, and knows how to read trace.

We were able to use the spotting scope to call shots for each other, and get hits with regularity.

We shot at bullseye targets, as well as some human-sized targets with realistic images. I call the particular model from Law Enforcement Targets Inc. the "Billybob Meth-Head."

We started at noon. We didn't eat lunch. We didn't notice what time it was until 5:03.

We made it competitive. We shot from field positions. We shot under time pressures.

Once, we laid the three battle rifles out, a fired them in succession from prone as fast as we could load them and get hits. Five from the Swede, five from the Finn, and eight from the Garand. Yee-haw.

Another time, we shot at 200 yards, from the standing position. We started with the M-39 in hand and the Garand over the shoulder with a sling.

After running the M-39 dry, we would drop into kneeling position, unsling and load the Garand, and then engage the target again.

We burned up a lot of ammo, and had a great time.

Ahhhhhh.....I think I might actually be able to face work Monday morning now.
