So I went to the Crossroads of the West gun show in Costa Mesa this weekend. The main reason I went (besides to ogle) was that I have been teaching my wife’s 14 yr old cousin about firearms and I thought this would be a good opportunity to introduce him to an armed society. His sole experience with firearms comes from Hollywood and video games. I will post on my teaching him about firearms later, but for now our visit.

We walked around for about 3 hours and I showed him the different types of guns, ammo, and accessories that are out there. He was in awe of everything that he saw, literally speechless. He had no idea that there exists such a vast array of styles, calibers, and even color choices in guns.

I instructed him on proper gun show etiquette and we got to handle some fine guns. He was shocked how heavy some of them are. The best part of the experience was that he got to see that other gun folks are very normal, decent, polite people and that guns aren’t evil and as dangerous as he thought. Everywhere we stopped, we were greeted with friendly conversation. He couldn’t get over the fact that many people were openly carrying guns.

I had my C&R and Visa ready, but there wasn’t anything I wanted for the price I wanted to pay. I was looking for milsurps and everything I saw was at least double what I can get it elsewhere, including from Big 5. I did get a couple of things like ammo boxes, and a bore scope and the only impulse buys were a wooden stock for my 10/22 and some alligator jerky.

The only thing I would like to have seen different is the arrangement of the vendors. It would have been nice if all the ammo guys were in one location, the safe guys together, etc.

Good time nonetheless.

Haven't tasted the alligator yet, but the salesperson said that it was very spicy so it probably just tastes like tabasco sauce. I did have 'gator on a stick once in Baton Rouge and the only thing I can remember about it was that the meat wasn't very firm.

ah! costa mesa.

darn, i missed going because i had to work sat and sunday painting the english dept at my HS.

how was it? do tell about some of the great deals. let me live vicariously through your gun show experience.

i remember, many years ago, going to the great crossroads gun show in pomona. boy that was fun. buckets of swords, tons of used guns, wierd folks, strange guys in camoflage, mall ninjas...

it was like the circus, but way better because you could buy the animals!

=)
