Is there one simple way to tell Mother of Pearl grips from Pearlite or some other manmade material? I have a set of grips that are at least 45 years old - they look like Mother of Pearl but I can't be sure.
Thanks.

Real pearl grips are very heavy compared to fake plastic ones.

You could also try scratching one on the inside surface with a sharp knife.

Real pearl is hard like a rock.

Imitation is softer and will probably cut.

The grips have a backing of wood so I can't see the unfinished side. They were on a Ruger Blackhawk in the 60s. They're now on a Ruger Old Army.
I kinda hope they're Pearlite. Thanks.

That's good to know. I was wondering if they backed Mother of Pearl or not. Mother of Pearl would be worth quite a bit more, but since I'd never sell them, and probably never shoot the gun with them on, Pearlite (or some man-made material) would be better for me.
Thanks for the info.

They were made by a company named J Scott, which at one time was a division of Colt. They are plastic, not pearl. ;)

J. Scott? Thanks. I have the box around here someplace that they came in.
Think I can find it? I tripped over it for years, now it's hiding.
A division of Colt made aftermarket grips for Ruger. Interesting. Any idea when Pearlite was made/invented?

Colt bought the company after World War Two to provide them with a source for handgun grips. But at the same time they made product for others including Colt's competitors. Anything for $$$$ you know. Colt cried all of the way to the bank. These days Ruger makes investment cast parts for all kinds of firearms companies. Also $$$$

No, but it predates World War Two.

Good info. The grips were originally on my father's Blackhawk .44. For the heck of it I tried them on the Old Army and bingo. Like I said, if they were Mother of Pearl, they'd be worth a few bucks, but only if I sold them, which I won't do. Now I can use them and not worry.
Thanks.
