Hey everyone:

Several years ago, I decided to start collecting different cartridges and build a collection. Firearms are one of my passions and I've always been intrigued by the wide variety of different chamberings, especially the more exotic ones. Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to handload my own cartridges right now. But a reloading bench is definitely in my future. In the meantime, I decided that the next best thing was to build a cartridge collection. Below is a picture of several different rifle cartridges that I have accumulated. Let's see if you can correctly guess what they all are.

Rules:
- Post your answers in numerical order from 1 to 22. If you're not sure about a cartridge, just put a ? mark beside the number corresponding to the cartridge.
- You win if you guess all the cartridges correctly. If no one guesses all of them correctly, the person with the highest number of correct answers wins. If there is a tie, I have other cartridges to break the tie muahaha
- Game will last until Sunday 27 Aug 2023 @ 12:00am PST

Good luck!

The angle makes it tough but I think @LoonWulf has them nailed.

If 11 isn’t .308 or may be a .300 Savage, if 13 isn’t .303 it may be a .30-40 Krag, 18 looks like a belted 2.5” case but can’t tell if it’s a smaller bullet diameter than the .375, if it is a .358 Norma Mag?

Stay safe

I haven't posted my guess's but I would say that Loonwulf is pretty close. Just a friendly warning, if you don't already know, cartridge collecting is a deep dark hole!!!

By the way, thats a cool lineup of cartridges!

Okay, so it is just after midnight PST. I was hoping more folks would take a crack at this. So LoonWulf, you win by default lol

You got almost all of them right (20 out of 22). See my comments below. I'm blown away that you got that many right. You definitely know your stuff and my hat is off to you sir

.223 Correct

6br Correct

.243 Correct

25-20ss Correct --> I was expecting this one to throw people for a loop. One interesting note though is that when I looked up pictures of 25-20 online, it the taper on the bottlenecks seem way more aggressive than the one I have. That has left me scratching my head.

264 Correct --> 264 Remington Magnum

270 Correct --> 270 Winchester

7-08 Correct

7mag Correct

X39 Correct

30-30 Correct

308 Correct

300rcm Wrong --> 300 Winchester Short Magnum

303 Correct

06 Correct

300wm Correct

300wby Correct

375h&h Correct

375 variant on a short belted case.....has a name......cant remember Wrong --> 338 Winchester Magnum. I messed up and should have put this one before 375 H&H.

45-70 Correct

458wm Correct

50bmg Correct --> It also doubles as my beer bottle opener ;)

.510 barnes solid? Correct --> I'll give you this one because I'm not 100% sure myself. But I did measure it out to 50 caliber. After checking out the Barnes website, it appears to be either a 750 or 800 grain banded solid. Barnes indicates that the BC for these bullets is just above 1.00 which is insanely high!

11 was 308 Winchester
13 was 303 British
18 was 338 Winchester Mag

Thanks! I appreciate the warning as well, but that ship sailed long ago. I'm committed now lmao

I have a couple of other rifle rounds that I didn't include here. I have a 300 H&H and a 375 H&H which appears to be resized to a 300 H&H. The re-sized 375 (left) has these little dimples around the taper. I'm curious to know what that's all about.

I also have 7.62x51 NATO and 5.56x45 NATO (both have the crosshair symbol on the back).

Other rifle cartridges I'm looking to add are:
220 Swift
22-250
257 Roberts
284 Winchester
280 Remington ( 280AI would be even better)
300 Blackout (alternatively 300 Whisper)
338 Lapua Magnum
35 Whelen
408 Cheytac

Always enjoy that game thank you!

The 25-20 single shot is a older pretty much extinct round, Winchesters 25-20 is shorter. I actually thought was one of the Rook cartridges when i first saw it.......ive never seen one of these in person, just read about them in COTW, so very cool you have one.

If you want to shoot me a pm with your mailing address, Ill send you inerts of a few of those as well as some other kinda cool stuff (imo).

The dimples are from slight excess of sizing lubricant inside the shoulder of the sizing die. A frequent artifact on necked down brass. Typically, minor dimples as seen on that case will be pressed out upon firing.

I have a plastic card file box filled with my odds and ends. It does become a bit of a sport to find new ones to add .

My best new-cartridge hunting spots are the hole in the wall gun shops, they often have singles of loaded rounds or fired cases that they sell.

The Pistol Parlor in Flagstaff, Az. added several new ones to my bin on my first visit there in June, here they are:

Well, I hit the quote button before I read all of the other post! I agree, the weird dents are from a little too much sizing lube.

Like I said, collecting is a deep dark hole that just keeps getting deeper! LOL

I started off wanting an example of as many cartridges as I could find. Then it went to different headstamps and bullet types of each caliber. Then you have military calibers, foreign metric calibers, the big african dangerous game calibers, then antique calibers like the 41 Colt, 45 Scofield, 44 Russian, ect. It just keeps expanding.

I have had donations from shooting buddies, from members of at least 2 forums that I'm on, have bought lots of cartridges at gun shows, ect.

Ahhhh that interesting. I figured it happened at some point in the reloading process, but the excess lube part never occurred to me. Thanks!

Yeah in Victoria, BC we have an annual gun show at the end of October every year. That is where I found most of these calibers. There was one fellow there with a whole table of stuff. I haven't been there in a few years but will definitely be going this year.

That’s who buys from that box!

I kinda have a cartridge collection by default, i keep finding rounds for gund i don't own anymore (or guns ive never owned)
I had a fun collection of pistol ammo for guns ive never seen lol. Got tossed when threw away my reloading bench tho i think. Ill go looking

Yup. Guilty as charged!

I also found five like new .35 Rem rounds with the 150 gr PSP bullet in that box. I believe Ms. Reeder charged me $1.00 each for them, which would be $20 a box if there were a full 20. My JM Marlin 336 LOVES those rounds, single loaded of course.

Stay safe.
