Hello all...

I'd just like some advice on a next gun to buy. My truck was totalled at the end of June (rear-ended while on my way to the gun shop to pick up a rifle I had purchased from a THR member in another state), and now I have some insurance settlement money to spend. I've used the vast majority of it to start a retirement account so some day I might be able to stop working, and I'm looking to buy a used motorcycle as well. But I've got about $500 to play with.

The three guns that I'm tossed up between are a GSG-5, a good-quality .357 revolver, or an AK clone. I don't shoot very much (a couple times a year), and really just go to have fun and stay reasonably proficient. I've hunted some, and feel comfortable and relatively competent with everything I've already got.

What I've already got is a Ruger Mk III 22/45, two Ruger 10/22s, a Marlin 925M (.22Mag), a Marlin 336, a Mossberg 100 ATR, an H&R single-shot 20 gauge, and a S&W Sigma .40 pistol.

I'm leaning towards the GSG-5 because of the fun/cost of ammo ratio. I'm not especially interested in spending a couple hundred for a case of 7.62 ammo that just sits in the closet for 363 days a year, when I could spend a fraction of that for .22LR. But a nice revolver seems like a great and classic thing to have.

THoughts?

Thanks,
Josh

Buy a clean, used no-lock Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum in K or N frame. They're not getting any cheaper.

+1 on the 357 because of the versatility and the cost of 38 and 357 ammo. If CCW isn't a factor I wouldn't get anything less than a 4" barrel if you don't shoot that much. The longer sight radius is a plus and the longer the better until after 7 1/2", then it gets a little goofy.

Smith & Wesson pre lock 686, every one should have one. Fun & Functional.

that GSG-5 looks fun, lets face it ammo cost is not your biggests concern if you are only shooting 2 times are year & you already have some plinking 22's

I think that my GSG-5 and Aks are more fun to shoot than my .357 revolvers. Obviously all three are very very different firearms but for pure fun I like the two rifles more.

Build yourself a basic AR-15 and get a 22 kit for it. It's not much more than a decent AK, will likely be a higher quality and more versatile firearm, and with the kit can be extremely cheap to shoot.

How about a nice DA/SA .22 revolver? Great thing about .22 revolvers is you can shoot the cheapest ammo on the market and it'll work fine all day.

A lever action in .22 is another overlooked option.

why not a good quality 22 revolver ?

I would pass on the GSG-5 , the marlin or the 10-22 will shoot circles around it accuracy wise.

Alright:

So the group seems to be leaning towards a revolver. Is the pre-lock deal really that important on the S&Ws?

I'll do some shopping around locally and see what looks nice that's used.

Thanks for the advice. Feel free to keep it coming.

Josh

It doesn't seem like you have a semi-auto military-style rifle yet. I feel like all able-bodied Americans should own one. I would definitely pick up at least one AK if I were you.
