Does anyone know if Reunion Arena sports 30.06 signage? I don't remember it being there, but it's been a few years since I've attended the place, so I don't want to say either way.

If they don't have the signage up, there's not really anything I can think of that would preclude CHL holders from legally carrying.

Anyone?

(easy thumbnail of the Texas laws... Believe this site at your own risk :) )

DALLAS -- Security details at Barack Obama's rally Wednesday stopped screening people for weapons at the front gates more than an hour before the Democratic presidential candidate took the stage at Reunion Arena.

The order to put down the metal detectors and stop checking purses and laptop bags came as a surprise to several Dallas police officers who said they believed it was a lapse in security.

Dallas Deputy Police Chief T.W. Lawrence, head of the Police Department's homeland security and special operations divisions, said the order -- apparently made by the U.S. Secret Service -- was meant to speed up the long lines outside and fill the arena's vacant seats before Obama came on.

"Sure," said Lawrence, when asked if he was concerned by the great number of people who had gotten into the building without being checked. But, he added, the turnout of more than 17,000 people seemed to be a "friendly crowd."

The Secret Service did not return a call from the Star-Telegram seeking comment.

Doors opened to the public at 10 a.m., and for the first hour security officers scanned each person who came in and checked their belongings in a process that kept movement of the long lines at a crawl. Then, about 11 a.m., an order came down to allow the people in without being checked.

Several Dallas police officers said it worried them that the arena was packed with people who got in without even a cursory inspection.

They spoke on condition of anonymity because, they said, the order was made by federal officials who were in charge of security at the event.

"How can you not be concerned in this day and age," said one policeman.

I honestly think Obama is attempting to prove to people that he trusts the American public. It may have been a ploy to open the minds of pro-gun people. Who knows?

Maybe, but he wasn't in charge of security at the event, so what he might be attempting to prove would have nothing to do with the incident. This sounds like nothing more than a bad call by a bureaucrat.

Security be danged - the important thing is to pack the house with adoring fans.

I doubt Obama had any clue, this type of decision is made by a political advisor in charge, the head of security can voice their opposition but they usually must comply. If I were a Dallas Officer providing security, I too would have wondered at the call, but hey, it's a thankless job, one that is damned if you do and damned if you don't. I attribute being alive due to an early retirement, the job was just getting to me, mainly the stupid internal politics.

If Reunion belongs to the City of Dallas then under Texas SB501 from a few years ago property owned by a city CANNOT be posted unless the building houses one of the specifically restricted areas like a court etc.

But, he added, the turnout of more than 17,000 people seemed to be a "very anti-gun crowd that don't even own guns, let alone carry them, I mean c'mon, look who they are voting for"

There, fixed the quote for him. :neener:

ding ding - we have a winner!

He like other Democrats will do anything to get elected. If he wins you won't be allowed in the same city as him without a complete strip search!

If it's a ploy, it's a darn good one.

Seeing as he is probably going to be our next Pres. We should send him some congratulatory e-mails on his understanding that law-abiding citizens bearing arms are not a big deal.

Despite the Hollywood version, if some murdering idiot wants to take him out, he or she will do it.

I believe that Reunion is still owned by the city of Dallas. So they cannot prohibit carry by CHL holders there unless it is during a sporting event. I can't believe that someone at the USSS didn't figure that out before they scheduled the rally there. There's no exception in the law for campaign rallys.

Who knows if that had anything to do with it.

I think you hit the nail on the head. I think he is attempting to snag the pro gun voters.

I don't see how this is a 'ploy' to win over gun owners. Do you think, if a Secret Service agent or police officer had spotted a person with a concealed gun, they would have done anything other than tackle that person immediately?

I bet this decision had absolutely nothing to do with getting pro-gun votes.

I'm no expert on these matters but I seriously doubt the candidates can override either Secret Service or local security matters. Sounds like a serious lapse in security. If something happened, there would be hell to pay.

The last place I'd want to carry a gun, legally or not, is at a prez candidate rally.

secret service

For some reason, I didn't think that the Secret Service started protecting presidential candidates until they had won the nomination.

Maybe Obama gets protection because he is a senator?

Yep, and as a gun owner, I think I'd be stuck with part of that bill. I'm sure he'd be tickled at the idea that a gun-related offense could boost him in the polls... and he has plenty of armed guards to stop a lone gunman anyway (because, as we know, all those nifty rules he's pushing won't apply to him). Even without 'official' protection, I'm sure he's protected at least as well as Rosie or Oprah.

I think this is the funniest thing I've read all week.

I could take so many directions with this...
