I believe after the Robert Kennedy assassination, a law was passed to give Presidential candidates Secret Service protection, so they probably were in charge of security. I imagine most appearances by candidates aren't secured areas in the sense of metal detectors, etc.

Whose bright idea was it that disarming 17,000 people is the way to protect Obama from assassination?
Let's say it takes you only 5 seconds to verify that each person is disarmed, and it takes no time at all to move to the next person.
17000 people times 5 seconds is 85000 seconds.
Divided by 60 seconds per minute equals 1,417 minutes.
Divided by 60 minutes per hour equals just under 24 hours.
Do I have that right? When was this rally supposed to occur, anyway?
