I was somewhat surprised to look at the latest NBC/WSJ poll and nowhere in the full text is "gun" even mentioned. Specifically, looking at Q13 and the list of issues that people feel are important to be addressed this year...

And last I checked, something like 4% of the public thought it was an important issue at all. So this is good news. I am sure it will still be brought up tonight as something the POTUS wants to address, despite underwhelming public support (when has that ever stopped anyone?) but just thought this poll and what it shows (and doesn't show) may be useful to others.

Yet it is still a party platform. No Immediate push but damage was done last year and they are just waiting.

It will be talked about, in fact Gabby will have a national TV ad about gun control before and right after the prez "State of The Union" speech.

"BOSTON (AP) — On the eve of President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address, former Arizona Rep. Gabby Giffords is challenging Washington leaders not to ignore gun violence.

The former Democratic congresswoman is featured in a new television ad set to air immediately before and after the president’s speech. In the ad, Giffords faces the camera and says, “Congress is afraid of the gun lobby.”

It would have been nice if we could air an ad before and after her ads on national TV that show how firearms save lives and how important gun rights are. Of course we'll never see that ad, just her ad. I'm willing to bet that all the political shows will replay the ad gratis in the guise of 'discussion of current events'.

Oh I am certain as you all are that it will be talked about. Just wanted to help illustrate, once again, that our political leaders have no interest in following the will of the people. There are at least a dozen other topics all much more important to the average citizen than harping on about GC, as evidenced by this poll (which is saying something too since it is an NBC/WSJ poll!).

Money talks guys, not the will of the people. The antis will push(pimp) gun control as long as they think it will help them get elected and the only real obstacle in their way right now is the NRA. If you aren't a member join ASAP, it'll cost you a day at the range for a one year membership unless you really like to get spendy, then it might only cost you half a day at the range.

If you think gun control is going away or subsiding, it's not. It's only getting organized. It's part of why I'm doing my Amazon shopping on Calguns website, a member of the NRA, and making my occassional donations to SAF, while trying to start my own thing for others to get in on in a non-cost prohibitive fashion. See post http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=742061

Settle in boys, it's going to be a long ten years if we're lucky.

The federal government no longer represents the american people, and it certainly does not act in their interest. It doesnt even pretend to anymore.

I predict since its an election year they *may* shy away from doing it this year...but if the dems do well in the elections in November, obama will CERTAINLY push for it in 2015, and at that point things will get really, really bad for us.

So is Gabby's husband gonna jet back to Arizona and buy another AR-15 after the commercial airs (like he did immediately after he convinced the Democrats in Colorado to ban guns)?

Money talks guys, not the will of the people.

They don't always need to be different.

The NRA is a member backed organization. I think a lot of the left is WAY off base when they talk about the "gun lobby" being a lot of companies that don't represent the opinions of the individual members of such organizations, but I'll also not pretend they don't exist.

There are a lot of companies in the gun industry with some capital to throw around - and honestly, that's a good thing. They make money off of us enjoying our 2nd amendment rights. They have a financial incentive to keep that amendment active and uninfringed.

I really do appreciate that there IS so much money to be made in the gun industry otherwise it might not be around today.

I don't doubt for a moment that the issue has gone away. I think the left feel they can get a bigger emotional bang for their buck with other issues. After what happened in Colorado, the party leadership may see gun control as counterproductive. This doesn't mean that we are in the clear for a while though. I can see how proposing lifting restrictions could energize the opposition just as quickly. We, here, know that gun control isn't so much about the guns as it is about the control. Both parties have come to believe that gun control is a polarizing issue and at this early stage neither has much stomach to touch it. I imagine after the elections the restrictive proposals will resume.
