I may get a job in Rockford, IL with a good company, but hate the thought of living in an unabashedly anti-gun state. Hence, how's Beloit? I've never been to that part of IL or WI.

I remember Beloit as a rather “downtrodden” town, but that is from about 15-20 years ago, things may have improved. Outside of Beloit itself, rural Wisconsin is fine, much more gun friendly than Illinois.

You may also want to look into taxes, Illinois has a state income tax, and they may be able to tax you on your income even if you do not live there.

I am a refugee from Illinois myself; it is a good place to be from!

Don’t write off southern Wisconsin, it is a nice area, just that I do not remember Beloit itself being so great, kind of rundown. I expect that you can find a nice place outside of the town itself. :) Just look into Illinois state income taxes to be sure that they do not hammer you! ;)

The job isn't ideal, but it is with an industry leader, so the experience will be valuble. I just don't want to have to live in a rat hole apartment again because I didn't look at the area well enough or commute more than ~40 miles a day to work, like I do now.

I'm sure they'll get part of my income, but as long as it's high enough and I can avoid a FOID card....

Culturally, WI is fairly pro-gun (more of the "hunting purposes" variety than the RKBA variety, though). Legally, not so much (no CCW). Beloit isn't exactly the pinnacle of a modern city, but it's no Gary, Indiana, that's for sure.

On the whole, Wisconsin is a great place to live (my other post today notwithstanding). vis35 raises a good point, though, insofar as I don't know how taxes work if your income is from out of state. Presumably, IL will get their state income tax withheld when you get paid, but I don't know what implications that has on your WI tax return, or on your IL tax return.

Not that WI is exactly a tax haven, our state income tax is between 4.6% and 5.something %, dependent on income. It's possible you're better off with IL income tax, really, but I don't know.

If you are looking to buy a house in Wisconsin, be sure to include the cost of property tax. Wisconsin hits homeowners pretty hard on property taxes.

Beloit is an old factory town that jobs left years ago. I'm sure you can find a good part of town though. Just be sure to check out your neighborhood pretty well. You're very close to good hunting, hiking, boating and fishing land around there.

I'm going to rent to start with, so that i can find something better than living in an old factory town. Still, I don't want to live in an old dive. I might even quit in a couple years, as I'm pretty much taking the job for my resume and salary history. TN, IN, KY or NC are the preferred locations.

Thanks to all.

Compared to Illinois, Wisconsin is gun paradise. No FOID cards, no Mayor Daley, no CAGE squads.

Waiting period for a handgun is 48 hours. No waiting period for long guns. Private sales are private. Range protection law. Pre-emption law prohibits municipalities from enacting their own gun laws. Class III weapons are fine (although the Beloit sheriff or police chief may not sign the Form 4).

Plenty of places to shoot.

The only thing we lack is concealed carry, and that's only a matter of time.

Depending upon where you live, property taxes can be very high. Expect $3,000 or so annually for a $150,000 house (that's Milwaukee county rates; other areas are cheaper).

The state senator for the Beloit area, Judith Robson, is a total loser when it comes to gun rights.

If you move outside the city of Beloit, your representative will be Debbie Towns, who's been very supportive of gun rights.

I don't live in Illinois, but I wouldn't mind having an FOID.

As a non-resident without an FOID, my options are "broken down in a non-functioning state" or "not immediately accessible".

An FOID would allow me to transport a weapon "unloaded and enclosed in a case, firearm carrying box, shipping box, or other container".

Hi,

I live not far north of there. (Fort Atkinson.)
If you liive in Beloit and work in Rockford, you won't be the only one.
Don't ignore other small towns in the area, there are several small border towns between Monroe and Fontana that would have you close enough to drive. I love small town Wisconsin!

Heck, from Fort Atkinson I can be to Rockford in about an hour. It really isn't that much farther to Janesville, keep your options open...

While a visit to Beloit may help your opinion, don't look once and write the whole thing off.

I don't mind living in a small town, but I want to live in an apartment until I decide if this part of the country is where I really want to live and before I jump into a house. Usually, you need a certain population level to find a decent apartment, else apartments are an automatic ghetto, IME. Considering that property tax is high in WI, that means even dumpy houses would rent for a lot (I don't want to spend over $700/month).
