Thai teachers to be allowed guns
A Thai security officer stands guard in front of a house following a shooting incident in which a teacher was injured, southern Narathiwat province, 28 June 2005. School teachers in Thailand's troubled southern provinces will be allowed to carry guns, the government has said.

The move is one of a series of measures designed to keep education staff from leaving the violence-hit south.

Many of the region's teachers are thought to have either stopped working or demanded a transfer from the area.

More than 700 people, including at least 24 teachers, have been killed since January 2004 in unrest which the government blames on Islamic militants.

Teachers are often targeted as they are seen as symbols of Thailand's Buddhist authorities.

'Fearful and demoralised'

"We have granted special rights for teachers to carry guns," deputy education minister Rung Kaewdaeng told reporters on Tuesday, adding that 2,000 teachers had already requested arms.

Thailand's restive south
"They need guns. This is now a necessity as many people have survived attacks because they shot back at the attackers," Mr Rung is quoted as saying by the French news agency AFP.

They will be provided with cheap or second-hand firearms and flak jackets, he added.

In the most violent areas of southern Thailand, teachers are already escorted to school by security personnel.

Education Minister Adisai Bodharamik admitted that teachers there were "fearful and demoralised".

"If teachers want to move out from the region, we cannot stop them," Mr Adisai told reporters.

He said he had already directed education authorities to approve transfers for more than 2,700 teachers out of the area, to be replaced by volunteers.

Hi from Bangkok,

Yes, it is so bad down there. The *&-+(M?!!! shot up everybody literally. My classmate, a Deputy District Administrator and a Muslim himself, got 2 shots last year walking out of the Mosque.

In the town, nobody regard the traffic signals. You stop and you have more chance to get shot.

The gov. limited the gun import, one licence can import 30 pistolor revolvers and 50 long guns. In total, around 24,000 come in annually. There is no local production due to silly law, I believe we can make better piece than the phillipines. Anyway, high demand from the South push the price sky-rocket as follows:

Glock19 from 1,100 USD to 1,600 USD

CZ 9 MM. family from 1,100 USD to 1,700 USD

S&W 60 from 1,100 USD to 1,700 USD !!!!

Taurus 85S from 750 USD to 1,400 USD

1911 Springfields are 1,600-1,800 USD

1911 Kimbers are 2,000-2,300 USD

For the ammo. American-made JHP is 1 USD a piece for 9 MM. Para and 1.5 USD A piece for .45ACP.

Ha, ha not so bad considering that a Japanese or Taiwanese are paying 2.5 USD to get a shot of .38 Wadcutter at the blood thirsty range here.

Nice day,

PS: somethings we get more than you guys:

1. Buying the real Benelli M4 Mil.Spec. require no special permission.

2. We can cut the rifle or shotgun barrels to any length without special permission.

No sir,

All full auto is not allowed and the semi can be only shotgun and rimfires.

Quite funny that all rifle adopted in the military is prohibited, so we now can't own the Simese Mauser bolt action.

The service rifle are M16 family, some HK 33 locally produced and now some special forces get HK G36. Some old M16 may be from Vietnam era but the good unit is equipped with the M16A2, more than half of the troop now use the new shape kevlar helmet I think.

Ah, we also have some "seized" AK47. Some (not me!!) said that most was "diverted" on the way from China to the Red Khmer. Vietnam had up to 5-60,000 troop in Cambodia for over two decades. Vietnam troop is not the favorite tourist, everybody hate Red Khmer for genocide but......

For the sub, we used HK MP5 but few M3 are still around at the Armor units.

The Military service pistol are Colt1911 and Browning HP and few HK P7M8. The Law Enforcement has various kind of pieces from Glock19, CZ P01 to Ruger GP100 most is in 9MM.Para and .38

The Carbine M1 was adopted in 1944. The Garand M1 in 1945. I did weekly National Guard training in the late '80 and had to carry the Garand in drilling.

Nice day,
